These caskets are beyond superb. They are exquisite works of old world craftsmanship, unrushed, and individually created one hand movement at a time. The elegant design, finish and build quality are so comforting to families who are saying their final farewell to a loved one. So nice to know caskets are still being made by hand, and with such perfection.

We buried one in Charleston years ago. I did not want to put it in the ground. You could just touch it and feel it was a superior product.

Coming from a family in the funeral industry, I appreciate the beautiful craftsmanship of your caskets and the care that goes into hand picking the fabrics. The first time I saw one of your models I was in awe at the luxurious finish and saw the pride of the deceased's family when I mentioned how beautiful the casket was. So many people say caskets and funerals are a waste, and that is a sad comment on our society.

Along with long held values in the United States it is so sad to see people not taking the time to have a visitation with the body of their loved one present and then a dignified funeral service.

My mom insisted on wood caskets for both of her husbands (my dad and later my step dad). When she knew she was dying she insisted we bury her in a wood casket. There’s something so homey and comforting about wood. It was beautiful.

@@danbasta3677Half lid is a standard in the funeral industry unless you are a celebrity. I am a director and that is how caskets are made most of the time.

I was 16 when my grandfather passed away in 1971. My mom and her siblings picked out this beautiful casket, solid wood, I forget the type of wood, for him, and it cost $1200.00, in '71 dollars. I was floored and told my family when I die, cremate me in as cheap a box you can get. Put me in a walnut, or mahogany, or other hardwood casket and I will haunt you. Totally ridiculous to bury someone in finely handcrafted boxes. Bury them in a new car.

James Howard To each his own, but I could never cremate a family member. That is not respect, it's "disposal" - like burning trash or something of no value. I have my casket picked out - a Mastercraft mahogany. I've buried my grandparents and aunts in maple caskets, my Father & Mother in copper-lined solid walnut caskets and my dogs in child size walnuts. All have been placed in Wilbert burial vaults (bronze 'Triunes') with the exception of my parents. They were placed in Clark solid 12 ga. copper vaults. But, as my Dad always said, "that's why they make chocolate and vanilla." BLESSINGS!

My only question is what difference does it make? I would take the cheapest, as I will only ride in it once and then no one will ever see it again. So in my opinion this is one purchase that should be the cheapest. Granted they are beautiful caskets, but can not justify getting more then the cheapest model. Just my opinion.

Your post reminded me of a wedding dress. Look at the great lengths a bride will go.. This is my last piece of furniture, kinda like underground furniture the bridal dress comes off much quicker than it goes on….. I bought one for myself… I was not will to make someone else be burdened with my details or any of the costs. Just call the Funeral Home and tell them to pick up my body… A final way to consider my families thoughts and feelings…

How come nobody seems to want to answer my question about this half a lids that are on caskets of today. All my relatives were buried inna casket with a full lid, none of this half a lid stuff. That half a lid casket stuff looks like it will leak through to the inside body of whomever is buried inside the thing.

People spend big money on luxurious cars and planes, that takes the lives of hundreds of people each day. Why not then put your body in something of value when you die. Why die in something expensive, and be buried in something cheap?

***** You don't have too over pay for anything funeral related though, they have plenty of low cost options available. It's the funeral home you're dealing with that makes the choice to over charge and not offer low cost options to families. Corporate owned versus family owned make a difference in costs also, but some of each are not going to gouge a family for larger margins. A family wants this type of coffin/casket than that's up to them and it a family wants a Costco one, pine box or green burial one that's ok also. Had a family member interned in a vacuum sealed double casket that was steele and bronze in the early 90's and they paid 25,000 for it. My grandmother was interned in 1988 and the casket was 8500 and crazy over the top in detail but my dad wanted her to have it. My sister passed away at 31 leaving 2 sons and 2 step daughters, we all decided to use a 1500 dollar casket and got tne nicer vault at cost. To make sure enough money was put away for the kids college funds and other reasons they would need the money. But my family has used the same funeral home for 60 years now and they have a reputation like no other, had family use someone else in our town for my other grandmother and they overcharged up the ass for everything. She was embalmed in Florida and flown to new jersey, they charged 275 dollars to pick her up and on top a separate charge for 2 tolls(that they added money to) and for fuel. There were "issues" with her embalming and it cost 350 for that and a she was then buried with my grandfather in Philly, they charged 150 extra for the family car, 200 for the hearse and 125 for the flower car on top of the regular charges for their use. Forgot to add the fee to dispose of the box and materials she was shipped in, while that makes sense it was triple the regular charge for it. In the end it cost my aunts and mom 12,500 and that included the 700 to have her flown here and the 1500 from the funeral home in Florida. Same exact casket as my sister, but they over charged for everything and no breaks as my grandmother was the funeral directors godmother. They handed toll money out and charged them a fee per car they gave change to. My one aunt asked me about it after the fact as I was one semester from becoming a funeral director and told her they were ripped off but I stated to go elsewhere but was told to my mind my business and I did. Do the math and think about how much they overcharged and didnt have to prep the body, the plot opening was high but they're professional and union where she was buried so it was a 1000 Bucks. 11,300 for paperwork and whatever the "issue" was and my aunt thought I should ask around on the prices as if I wanted to be black balled prior to going back and finishing my degree in a few years.

You can do that in most states, only requirement is the body be embalmed to cross state lines. Green burials are cheap and available in most states as an option. All were actually the families responsibility till the civil war and embalming became a widely used practice and most had other businesses and did it on the side. Term undertaker means someone took on the undertaking of all what was needed to bury someone. Undertakers on my moms side of the family go back to the civil war era, it skipped 2 generations though. Great great grandfather owned funeral trolleys and so many of his kids did it and theirs did also, that generations owned 35 homes in PA and NJ. Some still have the same name as when it was opened 100+ years ago for most and the 1st was changed to the current owners family name. I have wanted to do it since my grandmothers funeral in 1988 and went to school for it and almost graduated. My father passed away right as my 2nd to last semester ended and I missed all the mid terms the following 2 days after his passing. Had to help my mom financially and decided to go back 16 years later to finish and sadly lost most my credits and have to start fresh. Not sure why I typed all this, must be the fact I can't sleep and hope it makes me tired.

***** As with everything, showing respect for the dead is a personal preference. To some people, it is buying a "nice" casket and vault for their family member, or, maybe that's what the person wanted. To others, they show respect with a simple cremation and a memorial service or celebratory gathering afterwards. Early last year I went to the funeral of a wealthy family member. She had the the second-to-least expensive metal casket (one step up from cloth-covered plywood) and a burial vault that was one step up from a grave liner, which is a concrete box that doesn't seal and has holes in the bottom so water can pass through. (I know, the person is dead - they aren't going to know, but for me I don't like the thought of granny needing a flotation device.) Back to my story, I was kind of surprised that someone with money didn't go at least another step up in merchandise. It was a private graveside service and afterwards I left feeling that everything was as it should have been. She lived a good life, had a wonderful family, and would rather have had people give to the hospice that cared for her in the end than have a "nice" casket and vault. I guess what I'm saying is that it is all relative. If someone wants to spend the money and that makes them feel better for whatever reason, they should do it. And those who believe spending money on merchandise that will go into the ground is frivolous, that is their right and they should exercise it. ALL of my friends advocate simple cremations and memorial services afterward. I am the rebel - I want a traditional funeral service. I want a "nice" casket and vault, be buried in a "nice" cemetery, and have a "nice" marker. What they want works for them and what I want works for me. Neither one should try and guilt the other into believing their way is the right way. I'm going off my soapbox now. Thanks for reading.

These trash can funerals make me crazy. I am glad they didn’t leave me as executor. I would refuse to put someone I love out like the garbage. I think the casket and funeral says a lot about a man or how he cares for his loved ones spouse, child anyone you love. Yes, I’d like one Chinese Casket sent to me overnight.
