One of only two games that I still play from the 90's, the other being Star Control 2 (in its open-source form The Ur-quan Masters). The game is absolutely timeless and OpenTTD has made the original 1994 and Deluxe releases into a real masterpiece

Just got it and love it but my main gripe is it doesn't really let you know if the mods you download are actually activated or not. I downloaded a ton of mods on my first playthrough and spent about 5 hours in a scenario before realizing none of my mods were activated lol. And you can't activate mods mid playthrough

There are so many 90s titles worth playing. I also played Railroad Tycoon/Civ I during this era, but the ones I return to even today are TTD, Frontiers: Elite II and just about everything by Bullfrog (Dungeon Keeper, Theme Hospital)

short cuts: you can press Q - W - E to LOWER - RAISE - EQUAL the land around you. press D for destroy. when starting off, borrow the maximum amount you can, use planes from one end of the map to the other, this is the fastest way to start your income stream. never start with road vehicles or trains

I personally find using vehicle groups very useful. It makes it easier for me to find vehicles on a certain route. Groups also help with replacing vehicles, especially when using a real line train set like UKRS or NARS (these are British and North American train replacement sets).

You can also see how well that line is performing, as in, how full it is, if it needs more trains etc.

Clarifications / Corrections: Point 7: It's actually days in transit PER so many tiles/squares. Not total days in transit from source to destination. This means you can take the cargo as far as you like as long as you are keeping the days in transit below the amounts I specified per 20 tiles. (Thanks to Jonathan Emms for spotting this) Brand NEW OpenTTD Series 10 let's play now available, check it out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipmplKOca5ucj68

A few comments: ~ Point 8: Similarly sort industries by production to find the industries with highest production and amount of cargo to transport. ~ Point 7: It's actually days in transit PER 20 tiles/squares. Not total days in transit from source to destination. I find with trains this isn't even an issue due to generally higher travel speeds than trucks/buses/ships. I like to use very long train lines across a large portion of map as it is more profitable, this is because of a better ratio of total travel time to loading time compared to short lines. (e.g. 15 days loading to 50 days travel making profit vs 15 days loading to 20 days travel). I've checked (sorting trains list by most profitable), longer train lines do make slightly more money on average. ~ Point 6: Personal preference, I use the z-base, but often take screenshots of my games with the default graphics as other's are more likely to be familiar with that. Also some people like the retro look of the default graphics so it's more a personal preference. ~ Point 4: CTRL+Click a station to automatically set it to full load when setting up the orders (saves a few clicks to change it to full load after selecting it).
@jono7am5 жыл бұрын
Actually I apologise, the 20 tiles mentioned in the graph is based for that specific graph as an example (different distances would have different graphs). It's actually way more complicated than that. I'm assuming then that with higher speed trains when I was making more profit the loading time vs travel time ratio worked out better than lost profit due to longer travel times (which would be neglible for faster trains). wiki.openttd.org/Cargo_income
@jono7am5 жыл бұрын
Update 2 lol. So apparently the optimal distance is around 600 tiles for passengers in a vehicle travelling at 100 km/h.

These tutorials really help to fill up things I had no idea how to do (like had train-jams for ages). Can really enjoy this game, starting with really low density map, growing home town (as small as possible at beginning with like 140 pop, just to have it in Town category) and using profits to build cities (big money but can fill up empty places on map and get place for more stations) and industries (where is best outside random generated) and.. putting incomes in excel graphics etc. Really enjoy these head-hurting sessions of this game =))

I was under the impression that the statue only boosted passenger ratings; thank you for correcting that. And as far as keeping trains at stations, that's why a lot of AIs play with many short trains full-loaded. A corollary tip: Download a good AI and watch how it plays. There's no question but that it will do "odd" or "quirky" things, but there's certainly a benefit to following the thought process of the person who wrote the AI via their work.

Tip #1 totally agree and thanks for creating this great content. Really enjoying your Tutorial videos. Could you maybe make one where you compare the different forms of transport, and give some guidance on when you would choose busses/trucks over trains, and what sort of distance you would prefer choosing one over the other? Also, I saw on your Let's play series that you use a Mod for different industry system. It looks very complicated. How would you recommend new players to build up to that? Maybe starting with standard settings on a small map first and get everything connected and go from 1950s to 2000s, and then start new game on bigger map, and only then play with that extended industry mod? Again, really enjoy your videos, I've learned soo much about the game already.
