He could have done a better job of explaining why a good relationship with a Mastering Engineer is useful (like having experience with lots of other clients' mixes; being able to suggest things based on this experience and a "fresh" set of ears for the project which can reveal issues). We're in a DIY era, but all DIYers eventually need help from a pro when things get out of hand (no need to be vague about what this profession really is about). He also could have done better explaining why you don't want to reduce the dyn range at tracking & mixing (perhaps give tips on what to avoid while tracking & mixing to end up with better masters), that which prevents Mastering Engineers from being able to saturate mixes without the damaging effects that can be introduced in a less than full range monitoring system. Instead, I found the interview to say the same sort of things many pro Mastering Engineers tell the public, and tried to give it more of a "mystical" approach than it really is (he kept bringing up the "human" touch, which is a bit strange - EVERYTHING we all do is "human").

Mr. Gavin didn't teach me a damn thing. I understand that business has slowed down because of people self mastering but still give the community something. Mr Gavin wasted his money to get on the show with that crap. Herb is the manager of the decade but he couldn't save Gavin. PensadoHerb 4ever

All this "Human Element" talk taken out of the SoundCity documentary is silly. Viewers need to realize that by the time you're at mastering, you should be at the point where changes aren't meant to be drastic. The only reason why "Human Element" and all the cliche marketing speak is constantly brought up is because we're watching an ad.

+Jiimmy Greenland I thinks this goes on with the mixing as well. People expect the mastering engineer to do what the mixing engineer should, and the mixing engineer to give you the sound a recording engineer should lol. So because the recording is not right, mixing and mastering becomes the place where the average Joe tries and expects the magic to happen. Reminds me of a bible verse all this marketing, it keeps most "ever learning but never coming to the knowledge of the truth".
