I have a question, what does "fake user" do exactly? Been wondering that for years.

When you closing your project, all unused materials cleaning up, so next time you open file they will be missing. To avoid it make those materials being ised by “fake user”. Pretty handy when you created several materials for one object and cant decide what material to use and want to save one of them without using it in scene
