Thank you again, Dr Can... excellent as always, very instructive. Re: Homework - Absolutely, ditch the pawn, push c5 instead and _bury_ the bishop! Black rook takes Rxd4, white can trade a pair of rooks with Rxd4, white rook on e3 then moves Rb3 threaten to fork black king and bishop on back rank. When black moves Rd8 to defend back rank, push a6 and entomb the bishop in the corner _for good_ - this is "dream state". Future plans afterwards for white might be Be4 to stare at h7 and keep the black king boxed in, white rook can eventually come over to h3 and use that file, etc. Life is good for white at this point.

That was a very useful video! I would like to learn more of the basic strategies too, if you are able to make videos on that! As a low ranked player (1300) I do not know enough of them but once you explained them, it made perfect sense. Especially the passed pawn pattern!

Sometimes, like in this video, problems can be easier than others however there is always things to learn. The actual problem is to remember what we learn while watching it. I just love the mechanism of chess, it really puts my mind in another level. Thank you.
@Dr.CansClinic9 ай бұрын
Absolutely, well said! But if we truly and deeply engage with the material and understanding the dynamics, then we can transfer what we learned to new positions that show deeper similarity. You will never get this exact position but you can form analogies and find deeper similarities.

Excellent lesson. You give plenty of hooks to hang plans on! Homework. I think the main priority is to bury Black's bishop, so 1 c5. If black takes 1..Rxd4 then 2 Rxd4 Rxd4 is fine as we are simplifying down to an endgame in our favour due to the buried black bishop.
@Dr.CansClinic6 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for your kind words 🙏 Excellent answer to the hw position! The bishop gets buried indeed after 1. c5!

Very nice and interesting video! In the homework position, the pawn on d4 is worthless. The aim is to reach the preceeding position this in the video. The clue to this position is the bishop on a8. White wants to bury it and black wants to awakening it. Hence, black's threat is ..c5 and not ..Rxd4. Furhermore, Black's king and bishop are aligned on the back rank which makes a double attack on b8 possible. To stop Black's threat, I think White should ditch the d4 pawn and play 1.c5 burying the bishop, and if Black plays 1..Rxd4 then 2.Rxd4 Rxd4 3.Rb3 Rd8 4.a6 and we have reach our winning dream position.
@Dr.CansClinic9 ай бұрын
Beautiful observation about the real threat of ...c5, awakening that poor bishop! Great answer!

Thanks Can. It seems that it is all about patterns and forcing the sequence to get to the pattern you want. I am guessing patterns have to be learned from experience. Many hundreds or thousands of games played and then analyzed. Then you would have an inventory of patterns. Reverse engineering i suspect is also about experience. Wonderful video. It is making me think.

Thank you so much for your kind feedback Dan. Yes, it is mostly through experience and analysing chess positions.

Awesome the video! But what resources should we use to start studying chess from endgames? Endgames give me a really hard time
@Dr.CansClinic9 ай бұрын
Thank you! I would mostly focus on strategic endgames that shows you those important chunks and dream positions. Averbakh is a great author, together with Shereshevsky. But please do not neglect the positional chunks I showed in this video!

Great Video Prof. Can! What do you think about the Woodpecker Method to improv the intuition and pattern recognition of these chunks? Thanks.
@Dr.CansClinic9 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for your kind feedback 🙏 I am not sure about the Woodpecker Method, but spaced repetition is a great way to internalize these positional chunks. So my courses (the Art of series) on Chessable will be a good fit ☺️

Homework: c5 ditches the d pawn but makes sure the black bishop is in jail forever. After Rxd4 we trade a pair of rooks as well, since, similar to having a "real" material advantage, piece trades are desirable if the enemy has a buried piece, since the relative value of our active bishop increases. The only thing we have to be careful about is the black rook coming down the d file and trying to feast on our admittedly fairly weak pawns, but the bishop controls d5 which prevents Rd5.
@Dr.CansClinic4 ай бұрын
Excellent! c5! was the winning move and played in the actual game.
@mikkelhansen37149 ай бұрын
In the homework position, it seems to me pretty obvious that if we want to get to the dream position we will have to sacrifice the d pawn in order to tie down blacks pieces. Logically we can start with c5 so that black can never play c5 himself to activate his a8 bishop. A sample line goes c5 - Rxd4 - Rxd4 - Rb3 - Rd8 - a6. And we have reached the dream position! And the positions that arise if black reject the d pawn does not look very promising for him as his pieces would then be down with no compensation. If you start any other way than c5 however, black may be able to liberate the bishop with c5 himself, thus I believe this is the only real countinuation

Nice!

I Reverse Dream a checkmate in every game but usually turns out to be a nightmare!! lol homework spoiler - no engine The main line to get to the expected winning position at the cost of only one pawn is: c5 Rxd4 Rxd4 Rxd4 Rb3 (threatening to check and win the bishop) Rd8 a6 Can black generate a counter-threat? c5 R6d7 Rb3 Rb7 Rfb1 Rxb3 Rxb3 a6 Rb6 wins easily for white. c5 R6d7 Rb3 e5 dxe5 Rxd1 Bxd1 Rxd1 Rb8+ Kh7 Rxa8 Rd7 and I believe white has a winning endgame. There doesn't seem to be an alternative, white has too much initiative.
