I tried Shadowdark this weekend with my friends. We had already played Old School Essentials before and had also tried MorkBorg, but Shadowdark felt much simpler and more dynamic. The torch mechanics created really fun situations and pushed the players to move forward without wasting more time than necessary. I should mention that I played with 2 adventurers, they were level 2, and we used the rules where torches last 30 minutes and the exploding dice rule (on a 1d4, rolling a 4 allows you to roll again). And the Pulp rules, with 1d4 luck tokens per player. The limited gear mechanics offer a more immersive experience, forcing players to carefully decide which resources to carry and which treasures to loot. The adventurers managed to loot part of the treasures from a crypt, dismembering an Ogre, smashing a few skeletons, and barely escaping from an enraged ghost.

I have my players roll 3d6 three times for their first three numbers then subtract each of these from 21 to generate another three numbers. They can then assign them as they like. Some choose to do this process to generate numbers straight down the line though. The end effect is that everyone has a random set of numbers but every character has an equal total of stat points (63).

Quibble: I think you said in the video that xp was 10x your level. Clearer to say it is 10 xp per level.

Rolling in order.... yeah.... so you end up with something you never wanted to play. I remember that from the old days. You know what? We just kept rolling until we got soemthing we wanted to play and have fun with rather than having to play something we didn't like. For a one shot? No problem. For a long term commitment? I mean I didn't marry somebody at random. It takes being comfortable with that person. For me rpgs are (quite as) intimate so no, I'll not play a magic user no matter what the dice tell me.

A lot of Shadowdark GMs allow players to swap any two stats. And I'm sure some even just let their players place their stats wherever they want.

@@doomhippie6673 that so fair! For a long term game assigning > rolling in order makes a lot of sense.
