Can instability in the upper back result in an atlas misalignment? And would getting an atlas adjustment in the instance only result in temporary relief?

Great question. If there is an instability in the upper back more than likely there is an instability at the top of the neck. The spine will compensate for its week points and adapt to life's demands to keep us alive and going. Not knowing your situation I can not say for certain, however individuals we have seen that have had injuries of their upper and/or lower back, even with surgical fusion, have had great long term relief from care.
