I think you are so right in this approach. Isolate a skill and practice it under ideal conditions. And understand that when you get into a game you'll have to adjust for game conditions. I don't think one will reach his potential by trying to learn skills in game situations. And its not fair to your partner either. Get a drill partner or a coach. Learn in a no-fault practice environment. Compete in a competitive environment. Or at least that's the hidden gem I got from this video...in addition to the drilling format suggestions of course. I'll try them this weekend with my drill partner. Thanks for the videos. This one as well as the many others.

Sometimes I find myself admiring my 3rd shot drop rather than hitting and moving toward the net using split steps. Other times I move toward the net before hitting the 3rd shot drop. Sequencing is so important; hit then move and move quickly but don't hurry. Love your videos

I noticed about two weeks ago when practicing third shot drops. I tend to position myself a little off to the side. and swing up on the ball, kind of a straight-up arm thing. My point getting too is that I use this same straight-up arm swing on four different shots with pretty much the same swing. Serve, dink, drop, and lob shots. It's a little different touch, but it's pretty much the same swing. It seems to simplify it a little.

When you say "be balanced in all your shots", what do you mean by that? Do you mean that our weight should be equally distributed on both feet?
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball 4 ай бұрын
It depends. Usually you want your weight moving forward on drops. When in the transition zone, you want to be in a good split step, with your feet parallel to each other.

What is your target area? When I do drop drills, I usually target about 1 foot in front of the NVZ line. Most of the players I play against can take that drop that doesn't bounce and turn it into an offensive roll volley from their ankles. It's frustrating...is there a way to prevent that? I've been trying a 70% 3rd shot drive then getting an easier ball to hit a 5th shot drop with and that seems to be a little better...as long as my drive is on that day.
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball Жыл бұрын
I aim for the NVZ line. If they are rolling balls at your feet, then your drops are too deep and/or your trajectory is too lofty. You have to hit more linear drops.

Great advice, this is exactly how we warm up prior to playing. I have a question unrelated to the video. How often should I replace a paddle being a 4.0+ player using it 5 times a week up to 3 hours a day? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the video (and all your videos), Jordan! If you hit a 3rd shot drop from the baseline too high and stay back, the opponents can drop your drop shot into the kitchen making it very hard to get to the net to return it. Do you have any suggestions for that? It happens to me (and my partners) too often.
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball Жыл бұрын
This is definitely true, so adjust accordingly. Usually in higher level play, players will opt to keep the ball deep. Either way, you need to work on your drops so they are a little bit better so that it’s harder for them to drop you.

While dinking your feet are parallel to the net but at the base line you are perpendicular. How valuable is this drill given the different stance? Should the drop look to your opponents like every other baseline drive? If I hit my drop while parallel to the net I will give the shot away as a drop.

As one gets older or not as fast, returners have begun to drop it short and not try to keep you back! Wonder if you are at the baseline, your shot should be a drive or lob! Nothing more discouraging as the short drop!
@BrionesPickleball

Your drops are not that great if this is consistent happening. Also, a drive drop combo or a lob definitely can work at times.

A drive or lob is a better option if that is consistently happening, but like I said, your drops are probably too deep if they are doing this a lot. You can try to find their side with weaker control (FH or BH), and drop on that side.
