Late to the game here. Alot of people call the "Foggy mountain roll 21215215. But I have Earl's songbook and he starts it with 2215215. Which is correct? Or do I learn both and change them up from time to time?

Yes, you'll want to learn both. Only difference is the Earl version has a quarter note at the beginning where the other roll is 8th notes the whole time. They're essentially interchangeable but I prefer the Earl version myself. But you'll want to be able to do both. - Mike

at 6:46 you say you're doing a hammer on when your thumb comes down. Did you mean to say when your middle finger comes down?
@MikeHeddingMusic5 жыл бұрын
World Bluegrass Day No, in this lesson your thumb of your right (picking) hand is playing the hammer-on. Your middle finger is just playing the open first string. Your thumb comes down to the second string and starts the hammer-on. If you have any more questions let me know. - Mike

@@MikeHeddingMusic I see what you're saying. I read the tab differently. To me (which may be wrong) the thumb initiates the note which gets hammered but the hammer-on (again to me) is when the left-hand (2) is hammered down and the timing in this instant is done when the middle finger is picking the 2 string. That's where I was confused. Since the tab shows the timing the same as the middle finger picking the 2nd string the hammer-on is not creating a 16th note which you'll find in other tabs. The note is blended with the 2nd string being picked.

Wonder if my way of reading the tab is incorrect.
@MikeHeddingMusic5 жыл бұрын
@World Bluegrass Day Your middle finger of your right hand is playing the 1st string not the second string, that might be what's confusing you. The 3rd fret second string is the note you're hammering-on to. So you don't play that note with your right hand, the note is created by the hammer-on. Yes, you're correct though this is an 8th note hammer-on, not a 16th note hammer-on. You'll see hammer-ons and pull-offs played with both 8th notes and 16th notes so you'll want to practice both. - Mike

@@MikeHeddingMusic Oops my bad on the M being the second string. I was playing it on the first string. Thank you for your replies and helping clear things up.
