Have you ever seen a bunch of mayfly shells floating on the water? That's a sign of a HOT hatch happening - prime time to catch fish feeding on these emerging insects! But with so many mayfly pupae, how do you choose the perfect one?
This video will guide you through everything you need to know about mastering the mayfly hatch, including:
Killer Mayfly Pupa Fly Patterns:
Split-Case: Mimics the moment the mayfly breaks free, with a body that splits open, revealing the emerging insect.
Cripple: Represents a struggling pupa with a bent or curved body, a vulnerable target for hungry fish.
Bead-Head: Adds weight for deeper water and a touch of attraction, similar to midge pupae flies.
Choosing the Right Fly:
Match the Hatch: Look for clues like the size, colour, and wing shape of the floating exoskeletons to pick a fly that resembles the emerging mayfly. Local fly shops or online resources can help with identification.
Size: Mayfly pupae vary. Choose a fly slightly smaller than the observed cocoon.
Colour: Pupae range from light cream to olive or brown. Pick a fly with a similar body colour to the emerging mayfly.
Fishing Mayfly Pupa Flies:
Depth Control: Cast upstream and mend your line to keep the fly drifting below the surface, mimicking the natural movement.
Retrieves: Experiment with retrieve speeds. Sometimes, slow and steady work best, while a slight pulsing motion can imitate a struggling pupa.
Leader Length: A longer leader (around 9 feet) provides a more natural drift for the pupa.
Understanding the mayfly hatch and choosing the right fly will allow you to dominate during this prime feeding opportunity!
