what is the difference between the displacement map and normal maps

Displacement map is a greyscale map whose value of the color gives you a physical surface relief to the geometry by adding geometry while rendering. Normal map is a RGB Map which stores the tangent space normal information with Red being X Axis, Green - Y-axis and Blue as Z - Axis and it fakes the surface relief without increasing the geometry while rendering. Both have their own importance.
