if you use a thin piece of paperlike cardboard you can press it into the openings that you want to fill with a sheet of metal and trace the perfect outline so you get better patch pieces. you just have to press on the edges of the hole with the paper and you get a perfect template. i use it all the time and then some manual metal sissors and a small belt sander to get it perfect. Love your videos btw. Im restoring my bmw e30 316 coupe as we speak. It go more rust than the titanic and your vidoes helm me get some inspiration on how to tacle hard repairs and restorations.

What was the amperage on the welder? I recently did something like this myself on my E30 and I used 62 amps

Instead mig. It might be better to use TIG. You can avoid splater and better puddle control, for beginners.
