To all the viewers of this video----A very honest advice to all of you. The cheatsheets link provided in the description is a RARE TREASURE. I have never seen such interesting and extremely useful information provided at free of cost on any other youtube channel. At the same time, I will stress again that these sheets are the most awesomely designed piece of information which are so interactive that they will force your eyes to stick upon it till you finish reading each and every useful word out of it. Thanks a lot Rob Mayzes for showing your splendid passion to educate other music producers. You're indeed a Musician on a Mission. God bless you and All the very best for your future endeavours.

@@masteringcom Yes this is an understatement. I started watching your videos and thought, eh it's another youtuber that has slightly different techniques than the others. However over time, after watching several of the videos, I grew passionate for you as a human. Your well-mannered delivery and actual.. empathy.. for struggling musicians (not only producers, but musicians); makes me appreciate you more than ever. 'Musician on a mission' is the best title I've seen for a music production channel. I see empathy in your teaching. I'd cringe to say I love ya bro but I do. I'd say it's rare to love a youtuber over the internet. Thanks for what you do. I wish you a great future.

I cant belive how litte of a following you have in relation of the quality of your content, you deserve more. And here is why (in my opinion) : 1. You dont present your view as the ultimate solution but as your opinion. 2. You give very good examples for any point you trying to make 3.Your Video Production is realy good (not to much, not to little) 4.And most importanly , you explain very good. You have everything narrowed dont to the things that are importent and dont talk about uneeded things, and that why you dont confuse your audience and together with point 2 you succed with the intention of the video format. Please keep up the good work! Greetings from Germany

This may be dated tech today but I'm still a big fan of actually performing variations on the main vocal. They will each be lower in the mix, beefing the vocal up into one cohesive voice. Some examples of variations you can perform and mix into your project: a lower octave than the lead, a whispered version, a falsetto version (think BeeGee's Staying Alive if you're a male vocalist), a screamed version, spoken version with barely any emphasis on the melody. Some of this stuff you might be thinking "you can't be serious about this, man". But you'd be surprised how many of those tracks you'll find usable in almost any project you've got. You'll also be surprised how cohesive they can sound together as "one voice" when low in the mix. Now, if you have your own home or bedroom studio you can do this all you want. If you have to purchase studio time forget all this advice; that would get expensive quick.

Very nice tricks. I remember the days when a 16 track studio was a big deal, and I'd have to go back and sing a second track that matched the first one exactly in order to get this sound. I think I still prefer the way it sounded doing it the old way, but I don't miss trying to match every nuance of the track with a second performance! That was grueling, and studio time wasn't cheap.

Hey Rob, just finished watching over late lunch. Appreciate all of you guys on YT giving us free recording/mixing/mastering tips. Lots of actionable info. However, don't care for her singing, although, much better than the 'moaning cat in heat' on the Jonas A. 'Mixing vox' video or most of the iZotope videos. Am by trade a geologist, by heart a musician/singer/songwriter. Been recording my music for 20 years but began VSTi & mastering 3 y ago due to being 50% deaf now; can't perform anymore. Grew up w/ Beatles, Doors, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Tom Jones, Four Freshmen, Take Six, Aretha F., Cream, ABBA, Jimmy Hendrix, S. Wonder, Traffic, F. Zappa, Mamas & Papas, et al. All great singers. Currently like Nora Jones, Diana Krall. Can't stand rap & hip-hop. Couldn't stand the Bee-Gees or any males singing like castrates, or Pavarotti. I call that 'moaning hyenas in heat'; I cringe! Could you or anybody here explain to me why is this IMHO unpleasant shrill over-emoting 'singing' so popular? Can't wrap my brain around it. The last 80 years, humanity was really singing; not so much lately. My daughter & I have decent voices, methinks. Czech it out in full HD: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZilaKCml9uhisk (done at home) kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKTIZ4CDedyke7s (pro studio) However, keep up the good work. Struggling to keep our vox upfront w/ VSTi on that jazzy ballad.

Enjoyed your videoand although I'm not a fan of doublers, but I remember one case using the doubler on a BR-8 that was outstanding. Your video was very well put, very organized and you say what needs to be said. Mainly you stay on the point. I do a lot of vocal work on many different genre worldwide (guess you can say it's more of an internet thing.) Anyway my most favorite way to beef up the vocals is the have the singer sing the exact same phrasing and combine the two. The difference in resinging the same phrase shows slightly (depending on the singer), but is a nice effect in itself. One left one right. Then I'll add a little effects on one (usually a little delay on one) and different or barely any effects on the other. Then I try to balance the two. It's more of an experimental thing different for each recording. I never keep the same settings for a different song or singer. This has never failed me whenever I try it. Of course this will not work with every singer. Many singers cannot duplicate the volume, pronunciation, breathing, attack and attitude when duplicating a vocal phrase, and even harder when duplicating with a harmony as well. Just my way I guess. Thanks for a very informative video.
@Fiveash-Art Жыл бұрын
Yeah, sometimes all those effects don't do that much but make it sound more 'unnatural' and synthy ... Just dub a second vocal like you said .. sometimes you can go in and time stretch the consonants so they hit more accurate. To me this is a much better sound than fooling around with these plug-ins. David Gilmour did all his vocals that way

Blue World If you want another magical reverb trick set up your reverb bus like normal and add an eq at 12-18db/ octave slope before the reverb like he does on here but put a high pass filter at around 600 Hz or so and a Low pass filter at around 10 kHz. This is actually known as the Abbey Road trick. And you can even notch out some of the upper mid range around 2-4khz in the presence areas to reduce some of the harshness. Of course play around with it as you need to. And A/B with and without the reverb and you’ll hear what it does. It’s very subtle but it works wonders

Could someone explain to me how to do the reverb trick in Ableton? I send the vocal track to a new audio track and apply EQ and reverb to this new track? But the EQ will be on the reverb? I usually relay on a vocoder to thicken up, it ads a really nice character to the vocals. Not anything I’d recommend to songs with a lot of elements in already, it would probably be really muddy (subtractive eq at 200hz should help a bit).

Question. Should we do this in mono to find out if there are any weird phasey effects? I’m thinking specifically the the -6L and +6R. And to that end should we really be keeping such things down the middle so the character doesn’t change in mono? Lots of people blast music from their phones in their pockets these days.

Thank you for another great set of quick tips. I always learns something really useful from your videos. I've been doing essentially the same thing, but without Waves. I've just got those busses set up in a template in REAPER. Nice to know Waves does it quickly, though. That new reverb in Logic looks nice. It seems to have half of what makes FabFilter Pro-R the only reverb I've ever used since I got it. Can you explain what the curve effects? In Pro-R, there is one for the reverb itself, and another for the decay. It's brilliant. It also has a pre-delay which you can set to a note value which adds a lot of clarity to the vocal when you give it a bit a room before the reverb starts starts, and using a note value makes it very musical. Does the new Logic plugin have something similar? The only things preventing Pro-R from being the perfect reverb plugin is the piano key feature that is included in the other FF plugins. I find that setting the curve peaks so that they accentuate notes in the key and dips to deemphasize notes that are not when I'm making the curve have the feel I'm after makes it feel just that much more cohesive, so it would be nice to have that little keyboard handy!
