This was another very enjoyable reaction and analysis. This is quickly becoming one if not the favorite Dimash performance for me and it invokes a very visceral response in me, just as "Ave Maria" did. I believe this actually was a live performance in that Dimash sang "Ikanaide" live for the Tokyo Jazz Festival Live stream in January of 2021 as it was being recorded. According to several native Japanese speakers, Dimash's pronunciation of the lyrics is nearly flawless. One native speaker, who gave a detailed analysis, stated that he is "expressing Japanese more (better) than Japanese" and that he does not only perfectly pronounce Japanese but "expresses Japanese…with Japanese emotion.". Goro Matsui, who wrote the lyrics to "Ikanaide," posted on his Twitter account that he has never heard a foreigner sing in Japanese in such a beautiful way. As you already noted, Tamaki Kōji composed the music and performed the song in 1989. "Ikanaide" became the title song for the Chinese-Japanese TV series "Farewell, Li Xianglan," filmed that year. It is the story of Yoshiko Yamaguchi, a beloved Chinese-born Japanese actress and singer during World War II who hid her Japanese heritage under the name Li XIanglan. Following the war, when the Chinese became aware of her Japanese heritage, she was accused of being a spy and sentenced to death by firing squad for treason and collaboration with the Japanese; she had been involved in the production of Japanese propaganda films. Thanks to the intervention of influential friends, she was cleared of all charges but urged to leave China or risk being lynched. She resettled in Japan, where she would continue to enjoy a successful acting career. In the 1950s, she moved her acting career to Hollywood and Broadway under the name Shirley Yamaguchi but returned to Japan in 1959, retiring from acting. She would go on to become a TV presenter and eventually a politician. She did not return to China for nearly 20 years. In 1990, "Ikanaide" was translated into Cantonese and sung by Jacky Cheung using the same melody. Later, the song was rewritten and translated for Jacky Cheung to Mandarin under the title "Late Autumn." In 2004 the Taiwanese singer Terry Lin adapted the song into a new version titled "In Deep Autumn," with lyrics written by Daryl Yao. Dimash chose the 2004 Taiwanese version arranged by Terry Lin with Mandarin lyrics for his performance at the 2017 "I Am A Singer" competition but gave it his own interpretation and titled it "Autumn Strong." This song went on to earn Dimash the "Best Foreign Singer" award during the Golden Melody Award in Hong Kong. According to several Japanese listeners, Dimash sings Japanese like a native. In an interview with the famous Japanese lyricist, author of the text "Ikanaide" Goro Matsui, the poet shared what emotions he got from Dimash's performance of one of his favorite compositions. "I happened to find Dimash singing “ikanaide” by chance. The first thing that surprised me was his crystal clear tone and his expressiveness voice that conveys the lyrics of the song. I’ve heard other Asian singers sing “Ikanaide” in their native languages ​​several times. However, even though they all sing great, none of them seemed to quite capture the sound / reverberation and meaning of the original lyrics / words, and perceive the emotions between the lines. G'day from Australia. Marvellous reaction, as always. When I heard you hadn't done Love is Like a Dream, I had a quick run through of your list. Others have already mentioned Samaltau (Tokyo Jazz 2020 is THE version with an outrageously good traditional intro by the string player from Stranger and the flautist from Hello!) and War and Peace (many great performances). But one which I feel you would absolutely LOOOVE is the *Offical Video* of Be With Me. The live performances are great, but the music video shows whole new sides to Dimash: acting, fighting, loving, alpha male etc etc. If you haven't reviewed it yet, you're in for a HUGE eye-opener -- I can almost hear your "WOOOOW - HA-HA-HA - Oh you GUYS!!!" already.
