He says he knew who to send for, crediting Cromwell but then in saying , I always do, he restores optimum credit to himself.

So sad, the turn Henry made then led him in the end to become a monstrous despot - and he killed Cromwell after getting there.

@Kabuki Kitsune Another Counsellor of King Henry, I think it was Sir Thomas More, another close friend of Henry whom he eventually beheaded, once said that a wise counsellor ought to counsel the Lion (referring to the King) not about what the Lion can do, but about what he ought to do. I believe this clip with Cromwell is very sad, because Cromwell was advising the King about what he could do (take absolute power) and not what he ought to do (respect the division of powers in his kingdom). And ironically tragic because Cromwell, like many others, later paid the ultimate price for Henry's absolutization of the royal power.

@Kabuki Kitsune Henry was, for all his moodiness, quite pliable and far too trusting. He always relied on others to do the actual work of ruling.

@@shane99ca Yes. As I understand it, the real King Henri the VIII was basically manipulated into having Cromwell executed by Cromwell's political opponents, and he apparently almost immediately regretted it afterward, at least according to some historians, apparently. Henry the VIII realized that Cromwell, while he may not have been able to always succeed in fulfilling the King's wishes, was not just a very knowledgeable and highly competent minister, he was more honest with him than most, and less motivated by self interest than most other influential people in his court, or at least Cromwell's interests were more closely aligned with those of King Henry.

My wife once remarked, if you see deceased relatives in dreams, it's important whether they speak to you or even touch you (bad) or not (good).
