The kids that ran around Thorpe Abbotts during this time were based on real people and one of them grew up to be a part of creating the museum there at the base and organizing the reunions.

"They got it coming." I think that sentiment is what kept them going. There were rumors about the camps before they were actually discovered, and many of the airmen serving in the UK met refugees from the horror happening in the conquered nations (like that episode where Bucky hooks up with the Polish girl). By the end of the war, I think the knowledge of what the Nz's had done was pretty widespread. I was a young adult, and an aviation fan while many WW2 vets were still alive in the early 1980s. Met more than a few over the years at airshows - vintage "warbirds" from that era were a big draw for spectators..and the vets would come out to see their old rides. "They had it coming." was a pretty common sentiment among them. Another vote for "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946). Holy crap, what those guys went through when they came home.

The best channel on KZbin breaking down historical films is Reel History. The professor fleshes out every episode and made me very happy we have this mini-series and historians who preserve. Reel History's Masters of the Air production is one of his very best.

When Rosenthal's plane was shot down in February 1945, Rosie and three others made it to Soviet lines. Four others became POWs. The bombardier and navigator were killed and their bodies were never recovered. Rosenthal was actually shot down before in Sept 1944 but managed to crash land in France and get back to Allied lines. Sam Rosenthal, Rosie's grandson, plays Lt Jacobson who was flying as co-pilot with Rosenthal on the Feb 1945 mission. Jacobson was captured by the Germans.

The different career paths are because pilots / navigators all went to college beforehand. So after the war they got PhDs and so on…

You might also want to watch & review " The Bloody Hundredth " ( 1hr 2min run time ) narrated by Tom Hanks. Poster says " The true story of the men who inspired Masters of the Air " and imdb says " It honors the heroes of the 100th Bomb Group " 😉👍

To answer your question, yes the 100th BG had reunions yearly as well. A very emotional end to the series for sure, glad to see others experience this story too.

KZbin has multiple Rosie videos. A talk he gave at an Air Base is excellent. An interview with him. There is also when they named a bomber and location after him on an English Air Base. The documentary the Bloody Hundredth is excellent with interviews with these men many years ago. It also has allot of good history.

Something interesting to note about the german sergeant that they help on the march, his name was Sgt. Wilhelm Stranghoner affectionally nicknamed "popeye" by the prisoners. He was nice to the POW's at Stalag Luft 3 and after the war was invited to the states to a few POW veteran reunions. The former POW's paid for all of his travel expenses.

If you've ever watched the movie 12 O'CLOCK High there is an Easter egg in the scene in Masters where Crosby and Rosenthal are talking. Look at the mantle over Crosby's shoulder and you'll see it over Cosby's right shoulder. HINT: Stovall buys it.

PTSD is no joke - I suffer from it - but it’s hardly the whole story. For example, it’s been established that veterans from the Vietnam War out-earned, had lower divorce rates, and in every measurable way did better than non-veterans of their generation, on the whole. Going through combat essentially flattens out the bell curve, and slides it almost one full deviation toward the good end (more degrees, more advanced degrees, more children, etc., when other factors are taken into account).

Great reaction guys, would have been nice to see you react to 'The Tuskegee Airmen' or 'Red Tails' but since you have already seen them I understand. A fun fact, the guys were placed in Stalag XIII which was the Stalag in 'Hogan's Heroes.' Looking forward to the next series.

I would give the Masters of the air 9 out of 10 since both Band of Brothers and the pacific got 10 out of 10 but what a emotional story about the men of the 100th bomb group.

Someone said Rosie's crew on that mission was a mixed bag, he and a few others were found by the Russians, others were captured by the Germans and became POWs, and a couple died.

while it's true that airmen generally volunteered for that particular assignment, the majority of all U.S. troops were draftees. Not everyone was there to fight the good fight for freedom and democracy.

one inaccuracy in this episode is that that guy George was from the same hometown as buck, casper Wyoming, and they were actually imprisoned together at stalag luft 3 so they had been together for some time before it shows them reuniting in the show.

Well Russians had their own concentration camps called The Gulag. They were work camps not an extermination camps but prisoners there were not treated any better than in those German ones. Some sources say that even more people died there than in German camps. Political prisoners, people who spoke against the regime or even people who were suspect of anything I wrote previously. Soviets weren't much better than Germans in that case.

The Germans knew the war was over and agreed to not fire a the planes that were delivering aid the Holland. I suspect they were actually negotiating the surrender at the same time and went ahead and gave the order.

Stalin made a pact with Hitler over Poland but context is important. Before that pact was made Stalin wanted to make a pact with the UK and France - The UK refused. So Stalin made the pact with Germany due to the fact the his purges of the Russian military meant they were not ready for war. Its also interesting with the history of US and Russia. Its not taught today because it doesnt fit the narrative but Russia helped the US gain its independance.

I thurally enjoyed this series but left feeling disappointed due to the fast forwarding towards the end and multiple historical errors. They started to stall after like episode 6 with too much to tell. Trying to please everyone leads to pleasing nobody. Basically Sandra (aka portrayed Landra Wesgate) was recreated to make her slightly different what she was and it was completely useless time to use in the series, she didn't do anything besides being SOE spy, but they had to inform us that they did something also. Same applies to Tuskegee airmen who weren't at the same time in Stalag Luft 3 than Buck and the rest, and they have already 2-3 movies about it. Also germans surprise surprise segregated them, they wouldn't have been in same house. We get to see Rosie's 3rd mission almost completely, then it's 25th already and then it's 50-52 already. Too much in too little time. Masters of the air jumped like 2 years in couple episodes, Band of Brothers was just one year (the battles). It feels like the series had different director for last half. I have seen Band of Brothers maybe 10-20 times, The Pacific maybe 5-10 times, but I don't think I'll be watching this again very soon. Apparently HBO was meant to do it 10 years ago, but sold rights to Apple and rest is history.

Some are more picky than others. Some just watch and simply enjoy. Others watch to just spot the mistakes. That is a real problem these days. The point of this entrainment genre is to ESCAPE reality. THAT is the whole point. Why not rag on Star Wars because space travel as presented in that is a fantasy and dumb because it defies physics? lol But no, people see small stuff that mean nothing and complain. lol
