This video brought back soooo many wonderful memories from my childhood. I started playing in 1992 when I was 11 years old. I had been playing piano..but begged my parents to allow me to switch to guitar. When I promised that I would commit to it, my mother bought me a bunch of music books..thinking they would supplment my lessons. I was grateful for the books..but I clearly remember saying, 'Mom... I need guitar magazines with tab. I'll be able to teach myself much quicker'. hehehe. As soon as I got my first guitar magazine with tabs, I have had a lifelong love for guitar and music magazines. It is really sad to see that part of the music world dying right before our eyes. There aren't many left in print. Same thing with fitness magazines..toast. The whole magazine format is essentially dead. Sad.. very sad.

I remember Columbia house, you got the 12 or however many for 1cent, IF you agreed via contract to buy x amount of records, tapes (idk if it continued to CDs. ) over-the specified period of time. Maybe 4 per year for 3 years. They were priced a bit higher than average . I think it was brilliant marketing a win win. TY for reminding me i had sort of forgotten about those ads and how fun it was. The feeling of ordering that promotional deal when there were Albums !!! The artwork just oozed personality...Yes I acknowledge vinyl overall didnt have the consistent level of sound quality that the digital sound offers. There were actually times when the old fashioned stereo receiver and those very large speakers ( especially 6-8 of them) cranked and had us rocking our asses off. Great time to be alive,it really was. The mentak and psychological state of the world was just more enjoyable in general.
@KevslatvinАй бұрын
I signed up for BMG in the '90s. Same style promo. I don't remember the contract details but probably similar. If you only bought when they ran deals you could come out pretty good. Otherwise they were a little higher than buying at the record store.

This is a really enjoyable video, and quite a nice vehicle for interesting and nostalgic discussion. This magazine well pre-dates my starting to play so it was of particular interested to see what was going in the press - similar to what you said about about film footage of music shops. I'm not into Skid Row but Scottie seemed great and was very engaging - to ge fair I'm generally happy to hear any musician talk about their life and influences - and Scottie was dead easy to listen to. Good work.

Guitar for the Practicing Musician was the best guitar mag bar none. I had this exact issue and it was one of the first one I bought. I had a Yamaha RGZ that was, and still is, a great superstrat and my mate had a BC Rich that was the ducks guts. We lived for those dodgy tabs, along with the really dodgy “Cherry Lane” tab books (from memory-I might be a bit off on that). I recall Vernon Reid was a sponsored Hamer guy back then. I wanted his Hamer more than anything, even more than my mate’s family friend who had this blue Jackson limited edition thing with scalloped upper frets. Was a great time to be loving guitar! Awesome interview and the nostalgia has been great. I was 16/17 at the time and killing it. Subscribed.

Towards the end of the video you mention the martin stinger guitar, when I was 15 my parents gave me one for christmas, it was my first "real" guitar. I still own it to this day. Black les paul with the Pointy/Banana headstock. Absolutely killer instrument which can rival alot of higher priced instruments made at the time.

@jjcollinsАй бұрын
@@MastersofShred Yes, they really are incredible. I played it for a long time and then eventually put it away because it really is a sentimental guitar for me. They are WAY better than the price they usually sell for. Even when I worked in guitar retail, which I did for over 10 years at one point, you may see a strat or a tele style one here and there, but the les pauls really are rare. I've showed it to people in the past or talked about it online etc, and no one has ever seen or heard of them most of the time. I've always said they are just a korean made les paul standard, and in many ways, just as good if not better. I've had it for over 30 years at this point, and it is still in amazing shape and is rock solid. Definitely a keeper.
