Love it. I’m a newer Patreon of yours, so I’m catching up on all your tasty videos. This video does speak to me tremendously. I have ‘98 CIJ Jag and I bought all the tidbits to instal a mute on it, but didn’t own the right size drill bit so I was looking to someone else to do it. I was living in Boise at the time, right down the street from Porter Pickups. I sought them out to see if they could help me with the drilling but their tech guy couldn’t help me. I’ve worked on my own guitars for twenty years, wiring and painting and other mods. Seeing your videos and Nicebelle’s (who you both live just up the 5 from me now that I live in the Tacoma area!), I think I’ll just buy the right bit and do it myself. The pickguard has all the holes for the mute stock, so I have a template to trace😝 I truly enjoy your videos, man. It’s always good to see someone who loves offset guitars and everything as much as I do. I’m getting a Bass VI soon, so that adds to the things in common!

Update: I began installing the mute tonight. So far so good. I’ll need to shim my neck also, it also has a .50 so I’ll try the .75 that you did. I also have a 1.0, which I’ll keep as a last try if my Staytrem won’t play with the mute.

Awesome video, Mike! This is maybe a dumb question, but is there any reason why the mute plate wouldn't work with Jazzfriends? I almost never see them together!
@Puisheen2 жыл бұрын
Jazzfriends? Is this a cute term I don’t know for Jazzmasters? Gonna start using it that way if so. Jazzmasters have one little difference that makes it very hard to use a Mute, and that’s the small distance between the bridge and bridge pickup. Not enough room for the plate to fit! HOWEVER if you fancy a project, Warmoth has, for some inexplicable reason, moved its bridge pickup rout half an inch closer to the neck, which actually makes it a great candidate for Mute modification. I’d go that rout rather than modifying an existing Jazzmaster

I believe it's possible to fix the intonation shift by cutting small slots into the foam for each string to rest in. That way, the muting pressure is mostly coming from side to side, rather than vertically. Nordstrand makes bass mutes with this design and they're fantastic.

Purchased a Fender Johnny Marr Jaguar in late 2020 and had the Fender Mute Plate installed before taking delivery of the guitar. It's nice to have the option of using this and it definitely adds a unique sound to what is being played.
@Goldsteinphoto Жыл бұрын
This was helpful. I just put the Fender mute on my Jaguar. I also got the chrome bridge cover. Jaguars are pretty unique and a bit quirky, so I wanted all of the original items that makes them different. I wonder why no other guitars have a similar mute. It should be easy to make a similar one that attaches to a Tune O Matic. A creative person could make a very simple one that would work on many guitars attached by double sided tape.

@@Puisheen Thank you! It's good to know there's not a special Bass VI mute; a lot of people seem to think there is. When I typed "wide" I meant that my Staytrem bridge has more room for intonation and saddle-travel distance; it doesn't appear that it would fit over (or into) the stock Fender mute.

I've found that cutting a couple of coils off of the mute plunger spring can really loosen up how the plate slides in and out of position. Try that, and put some wax on the tip of the plate screw that rests against the plunger, see if that doesn't help!

No, you just need to increase the slots using an appropriately sized end mill in a milling machine. All you're doing here is just turning the slot into a larger hole, meaning there will be more play in where the mute will end up, e.g, the plate will wander more in the center to center path.
