That’s a $70,000 Crafco mastic melter and the substance put down is a thick hot mix flexible mastic material full of aggregate. I can’t speak to the quality of this crews finish work but the material has been shown to hold up much better than any cold patch or typical hot patches. It isn’t a “permanent” repair. As others have said that requires full tear out, sub grade repair and asphalt replacement. It is however a solid solution that is reasonably quick and lasts longer than most other techniques. Numerous municipalities are reporting that it lasts several years in on-ramp apron repairs and does a great job at filling in and stopping further degradation in failing asphalt seams.

I don’t know why they wouldn’t just cut that area out and replace the asphalt. Also where is the one guys safety vest at?

What a cheap way of doing a face lift,you see the black patch and you think a good job has been done,look closely and the cracks are still visable

Reading most comments, most of you have no idea what mastic asphalt is. This stuff is 4 times stronger than asphalt. But if the base is not stable, it will break up eventually. They could of did a better job at spreading the mastic.

Out of curiosity, do any of the 59 commenters on here know what Mastic actually is? Just curious

Not sure if your asking or just wondering but its hot crack fill rubber mixed with small aggregate like pea stone. Usually they use it for large gaps/cracks.

It's just some dude who saw some videos on asphalt and started a little side patch company for extra money and hired a couple kids. When you hire these kind of people you can't expect expert OCD service. Save it for the pros. People wonder why some pothole repairs fail.

Looks like it was painted over, not repaired. Could barely tell anything was fixed other than it now being darker, still got low spots in it, and when did they pack it down? Because if they filled it it, they have to pack it or all the loose stuff sill be gone in a day
@assassin_asa5 жыл бұрын
A proper repair would involve cutting that all out and re laying that section along with packing it, this shouldn't even happen if the base was laid right so it had something to sit on other than dirt, and thats the reason our roads suck

For how busy the street is, the lane they are working in should be closed and all staff should have at minimum safety vest on... Traffic should be controlled. Fly by night outfit...

Is that even a repair? Looks more like asphalt preservation attempt. If so - why don't they fill all the cracks around? It seems meaningless to treat the small area while the asphalt around is all cracked

@James Ferry I doubt it. I see this type of repair all the time, it will only crumble in a matter of time. They didn't even fill the crevices on the ground. No patching. That equals to bumpy ride.

This us what we call a temporary patch repair it's not a long term fix 6 months at best it does not create a good fix it will not last in high moisture environments. The non use of edging stones or curb stones between soil and the surface at the corner cause a major failure point. Your patching bad patches. Short term thinking ends up costing mire long term This is amiture hr.
