I find it baffling that Sony had to flip the functionality of X & O for international audiences, when having O be confirm makes much more sense. (O is commonly used as a ✓ in East Asia, so having O be "confirm" and X be "decline" is more intuitive).

Yes, but at the time other popular controller was the Xbox controller and the A button is in the same location of the X on the dual shock. So it helped with muscle memory making it more difficult to switch controller. While Nintendo at the time had the select button be the largest. You have to remember that at the time gaming was new and the players were almost exclusively dumb kids. It'll be another 30-40 years until everyone will have grown up having played video games.

@@FluffehStuff274 The PS2 predated the Xbox by one year, never mind the PS1 being from 1995--so bringing up the Xbox is a non sequitur. Besides, Xbox copied the Dreamcast controller (which was from 1998). Consoles having very different controllers was the norm in the 80s & 90s. The SNES had confirm on the right, and Sony wanted the controller to feel familiar to players of said console. The symbol associations and colors likely led to the buttons being swapped in the West. Some say it's more "ergonomic", since many rest their thumb on the bottom button. I rest my thumb in the center of the button diamond for easy access to all of the buttons, so that doesn't apply to me.
