He died 8 days before his 58 bday, he was hospitalized for a stroke and found out that he had I believe it was head cancer. So he retired and I also believe he died in 91.

Bert was originally tapped to do a new MATCH GAME for ABC in 1990 when he got sick and Ross Shafer took his place, interestingly, the Tuesday after that version ended it's run, Bert passed away.
