I thought of Erie Canal too! As soon as Gene said blank Canal, I heard that song in my head “I got a mule and her name is Sal, 15 miles on the Erie Canal.” I’m so surprised Gene didn’t remember that song!

I thought of Erie Canal second, for the same reason, though Panama was my first thought. There's a reason why that canal is still remembered despite its current condition! It was very important historically and a great engineering feat for the time it was built.

FYI - Nearly 200 years old and still going strong. New York's canal system has been in continuous operation since 1825, longer than any other constructed transportation system on the North America continent. Over the years it has been enlarged three times to accommodate larger boats and more traffic.

I don't think it gets closer to PA than about 100 miles, though PA does adjoin Lake Erie. I'm fairly sure some or all of it is in pretty good condition these days as a tourist attraction, though I wouldn't swear to what it was like in 1974. I don't know what Gene meant by suggesting it's short since it's about seven times as long as the Panama Canal, and it certainly was NOT defunct in 1877. The famous folk song wasn't even written until the early 1900s.

As Gene introduced her, he looked at her competitor and remarked, "Doesn't she have pretty nipples?...UH, I mean DIMPLES?" Everyone was in hysterics, including Ms. Lesko. Still one of the best bloopers of all time, I think. Gene stated later that he wished the ground would have just swallowed him up right there, or something to that effect :).
