End-of-week H/H match recap: ... Today's action: Our champion rides a "wave" to his third victory. Today's audience match question: "American ________ " -- I would say American Pie (1971 song) or American Graffiti (1973 film) The celebs: Brett (Flag), Jo Ann (Legion), and Richard (Graffiti) The choice: Flag The answers: Beauty, Flag, Graffiti (Brett gave the top answer the last two days in a row, but the contestant didn't take her suggestion those times. He takes it today and scores $250. Such is life.) Well, our champ gets to play for another $2,500, and that's not bad (in 1976). Since he matched Brett in the H/H the last two days, does he keep going with her, or maybe try another celeb? Richard did contribute the $500 suggestion this time... It's a three-peat with Brett! She lets out her little gasp and prepares to write. Brett has matched on her last three attempts (641, 663, and 664), so four in a row may be pushing it. But on the other hand, she and the champ definitely seem to be on the same wavelength when it comes to the head-to-head match... Today's H/H question: "_______ Oats" Good grief. That sounds hard to me. Quaker Oats? I feel like there's something even more obvious that I'm forgetting. Good luck to the contestant and Brett! Brett is really agonizing (she always seems to pour her heart and soul into these H/H matches, all the way back to the very one she played), but it doesn't take long before she's writing. It looks like a long answer, long enough to be the one I thought of. (Like the contestant, I tend to match Brett at home, and if I were on the show I would choose her or Charles or Betty if I had a chance to win money!) The contestant answers "Quaker." Maybe that really was the best answer and I didn't realize it? Once again, Brett has that Mona Lisa smile which I think bodes well for our contestant's bank account... ... and oh my goodness, she did it again! Quaker (with that same capital Q I learned to write in grade school that looks like the numeral 2). And then comes that wonderful hug! Brett scores her 23rd H/H match! (Note: Brett now moves back above Richard in overall accuracy for the eighth or ninth time -- I've lost count of how many times they've traded places in the rankings. They have always been very close when it comes to accuracy score, but Richard pulled ahead roughly 15 or so weeks ago, for what I had assumed was for the last time, since he seemed to be slightly improving in accuracy, and because Brett wasn't being selected often enough to gain ground. I actually expect that Richard may eventually pull back ahead of Brett again. We'll see!) So we close out the week with 5 H/H matches (4 successful ones!): Richard 1/2, Brett 3/3 Brett broke Richard's monopoly on the H/H match this week the same way Isabel Sanford did with her 3 consecutive H/H matches back in episodes 624 and 625. Brett now has a streak of 4 consecutive matches and a better overall matching score than Richard once again. But both Brett and Richard are well below Jo Ann Plug (not to mention Fannie and Charles), none of whom got an opportunity to play this week. Speaking of Jo Ann, she only has two more weeks on the panel. (We won't see her again until episodes 911-916 and 1131-1135.) Avery completed his sixth week of 14 still without seeing any H/H action. Looking ahead to next week, our three regulars will be joined by: --Semi-regular Betty White who returns after a five-week absence. (Gene better watch his pant legs!) You may recall that Betty scored back-to-back H/H matches that week (in 643 and 644, and I suspect in the missing episode 645 as well). --Lee Meriwether who returns for her fourth week (of 12 total). She made her MG debut way back in 1973 (116-120) and last visited in episodes 631-635. She's had one chance to play the H/H, but without matching. --Last but not least, we have a new kid on the block: George Kennedy will sit on the Match Game '7x panel for 5 weeks before "retiring" the week of episodes 1166-1170. Finally, here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Fannie - 52.6% (10 wins in 19 attempts). Betty - 50% (17 wins in 34 attempts). Charles - 47.7% (21 wins in 44 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 41.8% (23 wins in 55 attempts). Richard - 41.0% (157 wins in 383 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 665, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

Charles was always talking to someone off stage and not paying attention until the question. As far as Richard, yes, probably deliberate. Perhaps a little alpha male rivalry between him and Gene. Not a big deal. Love em both. Love the whole panel❤

1:15 to put his car purchase into perspective; I bought my first _used car_ in 1977, it was a 1974 Toyota Corona in near perfect condition with 45,000 miles on it. I paid $1600 for it, and may have overpaid {being young at the time}.

Richard gave away 3,000 dollars in head to head and audience match matches. Fannie won for the semi regulars giving away 500 dollars in an audience match match with 10 matches.
