H/H match update: ... Today's action: It looked like she was on the ropes, needing five to tie and six to win with her final question, but Howard Cosell's famed loquacity helped our champion clinch her fifth victory and move into the ranks of the show's most-winningest players. Today's audience match question: "_________ McDonald" (My thoughts: Ronald, Jeanette, ???) The celebs: Charles (Old), Fannie (Ronald), and Richard (Marie) -- As an added bonus, Brett threw out an unsolicited Jeanette The choice: Old The answers: Jeanette, Old, Amber (Well, after six consecutive times giving the #1 answer, today Charles's suggestion is the middle response, with Fannie taking the top spot. Note: Today was the first day in a long time that Charles waved as the defeated challenger was spun off stage. It's almost as if his recent participation in the audience match and H/H match has drawn him into the show a little more.) Recapping the champ's prior H/H matches: 1) Richard, no match. 2) Charles, match. 3) Charles, match. 4) Struck out on the audience match, no H/H. 5) Let's see... She chooses Charles again. (Win or lose, it'll break the three-way tie he's in with Betty and Fannie!) Today's H/H question: "__________ Instrument" (The broadest, most generic response I can think of has got to be musical instrument, right?) The camera cuts to our champion, serenely contemplating. Charles begins to write very quickly, and his answer seems to be on the long side, at least five letters. He appears confident (or maybe he's just getting used to the pressure - we forget he doesn't do this all the time like Richard does), and he doesn't check with Brett this time. The contestant answers with her traditional confidence: "Musical." And that's what he said! Charles scores his 24th H/H match today! The three-way tie is broken after just one day, and Charles's overall accuracy is now slightly above Betty's and Fannie's. Also, Charles is now tied with Brett for the #2 spot in total overall H/H matches - both have achieved 24! (But Richard, of course, is the big leader there, with 167! Here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note, for tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Charles - 51.1% (24 wins in 47 attempts). TIE: Betty - 50% (17 wins in 34 attempts). TIE: Fannie - 50% (10 wins in 20 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 41.4% (24 wins in 58 attempts). Richard - 40.3% (167 wins in 414 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 709, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

Carol was lucky she got an easy question to win, otherwise she would have lost.

Just for the record, Howard Cosell is a legend in sports broadcasting, and the yardstick by which every sportscaster, regionally or nationally, is still measured. Yes, he could be long-winded, and yes, he had a bad rug. But the same things could be said of Brett Somers! Maybe that's why so many Match Game questions could be answered either Howard or Brett!

I wonder if Ron is getting tired of having to do his Horshack on cue by now.

@@rockriverroyalrex No I meant on the show. I watched the whole week he was on and Gene kept asking him to do the Horshack bit like he was a trained seal. But yes, RIP Ron Pallilo.
@kevansf Жыл бұрын
@@GarretGrayCamera It's similar to how he asked Jimmie to do his "Dy-no-mite!" over and over. I think it was simply a way for Gene to plug the CBS evening comedy shows, which seemed to be why these young stars were appearing on Match Game in the first place. (We lucked out with Ron, who turns out to be a good player and a good fit for the MG panel and vibe.) I imagine a lot of actors (and singers) do grow tired of always being asked to do a bit or a song over and over even decades down the road, but others seem to enjoy it. I think for Ron, it was still so early in his fame that it didn't bother him, and he seemed like a happy, well-grounded guy.

Ronald McDonald beat out Old McDonald. That's the power of advertising, for real. And Jo Anne's answer "Ryan McDonald" was wrong on its face. She said, "He's the father of Tatum O'Neal." Um...

Transplanted his hair onto his REAR END. (Bzzt! But I matched the contestant.) He hung his girlfriend on a hook and asked a side of beef to KISS him. (Three out of four matches) Howard Cosell never learned how to SHUT UP. (6 perfect matches!) OLD McDonald (second choice RONALD McDonald ... $250 match) STRING instrument (lame ... ah, I should have said musical ... Bzzt!) That's not a subway strap. That's my GARTER BELT. (one match)
