What makes this show so funny was the fact that they ad libbed as opposed to scripted stuff today. Watched this every day as a kid after school. (family was still at work) I even set up a card table in front of the TV, cut out those cards they write on, as well as bought two of those "pens." In those days they were widely known as Magic Markers. I would set up all that stuff and pretend that I was one of the celebrities while it was on from 3:30 to 4:00.The specific brand is called El Marko. And I never got what they put them in after they were done writing their answers. If not closed those things dry up quickly.

Great memory!! In the late 70s, I received a glossy folded riddle card from a cereal box which, when opened, revealed the answer. I pretended it was a Match Game question card and placed it in the crick of the couch and removed it and pretended I was Gene.

Match Game has not only been my favourite game show since it was first on, but it has been--and will always be--one of my fave shows, period. There was a joy among the panelists and the contestants, too. The wit & humour on this show hasn't ever been equaled, I still watch the reruns & I still laugh. In fact, I'm such a huge fan that my husband and I named our cat Bret Charles Rayburn :) Thanks so much for uploading these to KZbin, Love watching them whenever I want to and being able to share them with friends, too.

H/H match update: ... Today's action: Our champion needs five "baldies" (as Gene says) to tie, six to win. When Soupy reveals his "dandruff," it doesn't look good for our champion. Will Brett be the "villainess" today? Yes, Brett has "lice"! (But in the end, it didn't matter - everyone else had dandruff.) So our champion spins off with $6,050 dollars and a new champion makes his way to center stage. Today's audience match question: "I got you _________ " (My thoughts: Babe, Under my skin, Now) The celebs: Richard (Covered), Brett (Under my Skin), and Charles (Where I want you) The choice: Under My Skin The answers: Covered, Under My Skin, Babe (I love how the contestant fits right in with the "Match Game" vibe: When Sonny & Cher are mentioned, he asks (it sounded sarcastic) "Who are they?" That question of course reflects Brett's (and other panelists') frequent response when popular singers and musicians come up.) Okay. A new contestant. Let's see: He called on Richard first, but took Brett's answer (he said that was the first thing he had thought of too) and won $250. Richard's answer was at the bottom of the list. Logically, he might take Brett since they seem to think along the same lines. But I have a feeling he's going to pick Richard... "Quelle surprise" once again! Richard prepares to write. This will be his tenth consecutive time playing the head-to-head. He's matched three of those times so far. I looked back a bit further, to episode 731 (8 full weeks plus yesterday). He's played 33 H/H questions between then and now, and he's matched 16, so that's 48.5%, which is a truly impressive track record. Today's H/H question: "_______ Basket" (I'll say "Picnic" basket. Laundry would be my second choice.) Richard thinks for a moment, but doesn't seem too conflicted as he files his answer. The champion says "Gift" basket. I initially thought that it wasn't likely to match, but as I type this with the video on pause, I'm thinking it's actually a decent answer, and there's hope for a match. I unpause the video and hear the audience moan. But the audience has been wrong before. It's up to Richard now... (The contestant says his second choice was Easter basket - another one I didn't think of, but now that I hear it, I like it a lot! Even so, I'll stick with picnic basket.) Richard mentions laundry and wicker and then reveals "Bread." Yikes. Way more answers than I'd imagined. No match today. Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Charles - 51.0% (27 wins in 53 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (18 wins in 36 attempts). Fannie - 47.8% (11 wins in 23 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Richard - 41.4% (190 wins in 459 attempts). Brett - 41.3% (26 wins in 63 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 772, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

Sonny and Cher had a very successful TV show from 1971 to 1974. They had a messy public breakup after that. They made national headlines for the show and breakup. The jokes could be about either the show or them breaking up.

It's fascinating how it used to be totally commonplace, and not coming from a mean-spirited place (but still obviously embarrassing) to mock accents. Gene was so into accents and speech he would also mock black contestants like if they answered "head" he'd say "hayd" and often slipped into "jive" talk. It's just an observation of a different time, not a criticism.
