What was Gene so embarrassed about or reluctant to say at 9:39? The only cork phrase I can think of that is vaguely off color is "Cork high and bottle deep..." (meaning drunk) or "liquid cork," (meaning diarrhea medicine) which wouldn't have worked anyway. The exchange with Richard was very funny -- he was NOT letting him off the hook, asking him 3x to say what he was thinking!

H/H match update and End-of-Week Recap: ... ~~~Today's Action: Our champion scored zero matches in two tie-breakers, thus ending her short career as MG champion. She had won a single game and $600. Now we have another brand-new champion facing the Super-Match. *Today's audience match question: "Patrick________"* (My thoughts: First, I hate "name" questions! - Macnee, Henry, Kennedy) The celebs: Gary (Henry), Richard (McGoohan), Brett (Macnee) The choice: Henry The answers: Moynihan, McGoohan, Henry Another new champion, another chance for a new celebrity to answer the H/H? I'm thinking not. Let's see... Yawn redux. This is King Richard's 19th consecutive time answering the head-to-head question. He's matched six of those 19 times so far. Stats: Richard has matched 93 of his 224 most recent attempts (41.5%), 76 of his last 181 attempts (42.0%), 32 of his last 84 attempts (38.1%), and 13 of his last 40 attempts (32.5%). His overall success rate is *41.5%* and this is his 702nd attempt so far. For the sake of comparison: Joyce has matched 3 of her 4 attempts (75%), Charles has matched 33 of his 69 attempts (47.8%), Brett has matched 30 of her 70 attempts (42.9%), and Richard has matched 291 of his 701 attempts (41.5%). Mary Wickes and Gary Crosby haven't answered any H/H questions yet. *Today's H/H question: "Cork________"* (Huh! Nothing really springs to mind. Cork, Ireland? Corkscrew maybe. That's what I'll go with.) Richard appears momentarily puzzled. He looks over at Joyce as the camera pulls away. When we see Richard again, he's writing his response and he files it without hesitation. Our champion quickly gives my predicted answer, receiving an encouraging round of applause. And it's unanimous today! Richard scores his 292nd H/H match today. ~~~The Week that Was: Five days, five H/H questions, two matches. - Richard 2/5 - A nondescript week as far as the H/H goes. It was the third consecutive all-Richard week and the fourth of the past five weeks where he answered every single question: (It's a shame because we had three panelists with better track records than Richard, and none of them was called on all week.) Recapping this week's panelists: *Richard* had a par week, and his overall average ended exactly where it started the week, at 41.6%, although it had slipped to 41.5% during the week. *Brett* was idle for her third week, sitting pretty at 42.9%. *Charles* was idle for his sixth week, his accuracy score holding steady at 47.8%. *Joyce* Bulifant finished her 30th week of 38. No H/H action for her this week, so she holds steady at 75% (3 out of 4), the best track record on this week's panel, although based on minimal stats. *Mary* Wickes completed her 9th week of 14, still without getting her first shot at a head-to-head question. *Gary* Crosby completed his first and last week as a Match Game panelist, also without answering a head-to-head question. ~~~Looking ahead, next week is going to be a terrific one, with all familiar faces, and, what's more, every single celebrity has had at least some experience answering a head-to-head question! (That doesn't happen too often.) So here are the faces we'll see joining our three stalwart regulars for the coming week: -----Semi-regular Betty White will return for her 53rd week of 75. Betty has been away for three weeks, and it's great to have her back. Speaking of great, her track record in the H/H is an impressive 50.0%, better than any other panelist with what I consider "mature" stats, that is, at least 10 or 15 attempts. -----Lee Meriwether will return for her 8th week (of 12 total). Lee last graced the panel in episodes 991-995. She has been chosen only once for a head-to-head, and it didn't result in a match. In the coming week, I'd love to see her name added to the list of MG celebrities who have scored a H/H match, especially since Lee has been a part of the MG family since 1973 (episodes 116-120). -----Last but not least, George Kennedy returns for his 4th week (of 5 total). George last appeared way back in 851-855. What's interesting about George is that during his debut week, he was called on for the head-to-head twice... and matched both times! He hasn't had a chance to play a big-money question since, so he's stalled at 2 for 2. One more match will "promote" him to the big leader board, though. It'd be nice to see him achieve than honor before he "retires" from the panel in episodes 1166-1170 in early 1978. ~~~Finally, here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.)
