The joke about the wheels on Mrs. Jones is a flat out old Yiddish saying: "If Gramma had wheels she'd be a wagon..."

H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... This is now week 235 of our favorite classic game show (the show ends with week 291 and episode number 1455). These episodes were taped on February 5, 1978, and originally aired in mid-March of 1978. Our stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces, and this time they're joined by these three familiar faces: ~~~Semi-regular Fannie Flagg is back (she last appeared in 1146-1150) for her 74th week (of 90). So far, Fannie has earned a 48.5% accuracy (16 wins in 33 attempts) in the head-to-head match. ~~~Elaine Joyce returns for her 21st week (of 26 total). We last saw Elaine in episodes 1121-1125. Elaine has been only chosen to answer one H/H question so far, but she scored a match! (Chosen just once in 100 shows...) ~~~Last but not least, Dick Martin pops up for his 13th week (of 22 total). We last saw Dick in episodes 1136-1140, and he's so far appeared in 60 shows without yet being chosen for a single H/H question. King Richard was the unanimous choice for the H/H for the seventh week in a row, matching two of seven questions last week. Reviewing the past 89 weeks, Richard has played *390* times. Everyone else combined played *54* times. (Charles had 17 opportunities, Brett 13, Fannie 13, Betty 3, Lynn Deerfield 1, Gary Burghoff 1, Rosemary Forsyth 1, Nipsey Russell 1, Meg Bennett 1, Scoey Mitchell 1, Trish Stewart 1, and Marcia Wallace 1.) Percentage-wise, Richard has answered an amazing *87.8%* of all the H/H questions over these past 89 weeks. Richard starts the week off with a very good track record, having matched 42.2% of his H/H questions, just behind Brett's accuracy score (42.3%) and well behind Charles's (48.6%). This week we also have Fannie Flagg with her awesome track record (48.5%), and Elaine Joyce who scored a matched on her single attempt so far. So yet another week with a terrific panel offering several celebs with better track records than Richard's when it comes to matching in the head-to-head questions, but if the past is any guide, those results are meaningless when it comes to which celebrity is chosen for a chance to win the big money... Well, eventually someone else will have a chance at the head-to-head (no one but Richard has played since 1127), and maybe this will be the week. I'd hate to think we have to wait until the Star Wheel arrives (episode 1246) to see someone not named Richard sweat it out in the H/H hot seat. Honestly, wouldn't it be more exciting to see someone like Eva Gabor or Ethel Merman or Dick Martin play once in a while? It's sad to think of all the entertaining panelists (some were good players) who never got a chance at a H/H because it was always Richard, Richard, Richard, and I think this is one area where the MG producers missed an opportunity to add a little interest and excitement to the game, and the Star Wheel was too little, too late. (To their credit, they did try to tweak the system back in episode 462 by introducing that now infamous "new rule" that a champion can't choose the same H/H celeb that they'd just won with. Unfortunately, the rule was a bit cumbersome to explain and was introduced in a spectacularly abrupt and clumsy way. But it did help Brett get chosen more often, and ironically, it forced a couple of champions who had matched with Brett to choose Richard instead! At any rate, that new rule didn't last long. I forgot to note the exact date of its undoing, but it was only in place for a couple of weeks before disappearing without explanation.) Anyway, on with the show! ~~~Today's action: After a tie-breaker that ended in a 6-6 tie, time has run out, so we'll have to wait until tomorrow to see if our champ can win her second game, or if the challenger will become the new champion. Stay tuned. ~~~Meanwhile, here's the full list of all 38 celebrities who have so far scored a H/H match in Match Game '7x (in alphabetical order): *The most recent addition to the list was Rosemary Forsyth who matched a H/H question in episode 949.* Don Adams, Jack Albertson, Morey Amsterdam, Orson Bean, Charlie Brill, Joyce Bulifant, Gary Burghoff, Jack Carter, Bert Convy, Bill Daily, Clifton Davis, Richard Dawson, Lynn Deerfield, Patti Deutsch, Ann Elder, Fannie Flagg, Rosemary Forsyth, Stu Gilliam, Elaine Joyce, Carolyn Jones, George Kennedy, Jack Klugman, Michael Landon, June Lockhart, Allen Ludden, Mary Ann Mobley, Jo Ann Pflug, Charles Nelson Reilly, Madlyn Rhue, Isabel Sanford, Brett Somers, Kaye Stevens, Trish Stewart, Loretta Switt, Richard Thomas, Bobby Van, Betty White, and Jo Anne Worley. ~~~Finally, here's our standing leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts). Charles - 48.6% (34 wins in 70 attempts). Fannie - 48.5% (16 wins in 33 attempts). (*)Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 42.3% (30 wins in 71 attempts). Richard - 42.2% (341 wins in 808 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1171, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)

Sometimes I can`t tell when some of these stars are pissed at each other or when they`re just having a bad day. But Richard just has`nt looked happy for a while. Maybe it`s just burnout from doing two shows, or having to do multiple episodes of Match Game every day as well as Family Feud. I don`t know, But I hate it when they show it on camera. Especially in a couple of episodes ago at the beginning of the show before Gene started the game, and he was joking around and asked Richard to pick a card.....and after Gene`s back was turned, Richard gave him a nasty sneer of if looks could kill..........kind of like two game show hosts squaring off

Yeah, he haf some serious burnout - MG, if I recall, had two weeks recorded over 2 days and FF also recorded several days' worth of transmitted episodes over a couple days. Each day's recording would be several hours, 8 minimum. MG also had rehearsal days. I bet FF would as well. Burnout and literal fatigue would not be surprising at all. I also wonder if FF's more demure tone contributed. MG was definitely not as formal and I wonder if Richard was also distancing for that...?

@@jimmeasel1712 That might be. I haven`t seen such large valise`s under anybody`s eyes since the last time I pulled an all nighter. But DAMN he looks exhausted. But I mean he could at least try to look like he`s enjoy himself. Also with all the stuff Gene has to deal with being the host of his own show even HE has to put on a smile and look like he`s enjoying what he does. Especially after dealing with gary burghoff that time on Match Game 75 I think it was when the little twerp dumped a garbage pail of paper and other junk on the stage in front of Gene, and was chasing him all over the stage at the top of the shows and just generally acting like a horses ass. But at least Gene always put on a brave face and smiled. But you know, I understand, and I loved Richard, may he rest in peace.
