H/H match update: ... ~~~Today's action: She made it to a tie-breaker, but our champion couldn't win her fourth game (she leaves with $6,300), and so a new champion takes her place beside Gene on that blue dot. *Today's audience match question: "Ghost________"* (My thoughts: Town, Story, and Mrs. Muir) The celebs: Richard (Town), Brett (and Mrs. Muir), Betty (writer) The choice: Town The answers: Of a Chance, Writer, Town Interesting. Once again (@ 17:35), Gene echoes the popular mythology by saying that Richard's "judgment is usually quite good." Well, at least he said "usually" - once in the past, he said "always." Richard is definitely good at the game, but his answers are certainly no guarantee. To illustrate that point, here are the times (starting with episode 900) when Richard was chosen for the *first* suggestion and gave an answer that wasn't even on the audience match board: 901, 902, 906, 911, 914, 921, 923, 927, 949, 975, 977, 978, 980, 981, 989, 997, 1004, 1005, 1013, 1040, 1077, 1079, 1086, 1089, 1104, 1106, 1111, 1114, 1115, 1122, 1124, 1137, 1141, 1151, 1157, 1161, 1165, 1176, 1182. But it's comments like Gene's that help encourage contestants to choose Richard for the H/H nearly 90% of the time over the past two years, even though he has the lowest actual rate of successful head-to-head matches among the celebs (excluding only Bert Convy). And so it's no surprise when our champion chooses Mr. Dawson. This is now King Richard's 57th consecutive H/H attempt. (No other celeb has played a head-to-head question since Fannie in 1132.) Stats: Richard has matched 149 of his 345 most recent attempts (43.2%), 88 of his last 205 attempts (42.9%), 41 of his past 97 attempts (42.3%), 27 of his past 70 attempts (38.6%), and 10 of his past 28 attempts (35.7%). His overall success rate is *42.2%* and this is his 823rd attempt so far. For the sake of comparison: Betty has matched 19 of her 38 attempts (50.0%), Charles has matched 34 of his 70 attempts (48.6%), Brett has matched 30 of her 71 attempts (42.3%), and Richard has matched 347 of his 822 attempts (42.2%). Neither David nor Eva has yet been chosen to answer a head-to-head question. *Today's H/H question: "The Detroit________"* (How about the Detroit Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Bureau? Just kidding. I'm sure a sports team is what they're looking for. Lions or Tigers? Or Pistons? And the way sports teams tend to move around lately, I'm not even 100% sure that those teams were there then. I'll say Lions.) Richard pauses his writing to read something Betty is suggesting. After a brief exchange, Richard files his card. Meanwhile, Gene is admonishing the audience because they've apparently called out some answers that Gene says may be "lousy." But the champion says she wasn't swayed by anything she may have heard, that this is her own answer: "Tigers," she calls out with enthusiasm. "It was either-or," says Richard, showing "Lions." No H/H match today. ~~~Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts). Charles - 48.6% (34 wins in 70 attempts). Fannie - 48.5% (16 wins in 33 attempts). (*)Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 42.3% (30 wins in 71 attempts). (42.2535%) Richard - 42.2% (347 wins in 823 attempts). (42.1628%) Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1184, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)
