The most simple of these ways is by combining notes based on the intervals from which their frequencies differ. In Western music there are 12 tones in a scale which is a series of notes separated by some regular intervals resulting in the last note which is a multiple interval of the first note's frequency. The major chord which is what you might think of as a happy sound (which is culturally indicated) consists of the notes C, E, and G, for example. The frequency intervals combine in a way where the waves constructively combine and are in phase with each other. The Devil's Chord is also a chord of three notes, but it combines to give an ominous and unsettling sound. It's called the Diabolus in Musica (the devil in music), it's often touted as a sound that historically was avoided, but this is untrue and it frequently arises in music very purposefully. When musicians without any other context say, "Let's harmonize," the first thing that always comes to mind is a major chord. That's why it was surprising to hear anything other than that.
