My mom passed away from a drug overdose in 2011...My sister and I got a tattoo dedicated to this song and my mom, we listened to the song in the car in the way to the consultation not knowing what we had wanted... after hearing “we’re all grown now, yeah but we don’t know how to get it back to good,” - we knew within an instant that this would be a part of it. We miss our mom immensely and this song defined it perfectly.

I'm sorry for your loss. I hope you are able to forgive your mom for her shortcomings. I've been clean for 13 years now and as an addict, I can tell you, we never stop loving our families, there's just a drug that takes first priority and it's not on purpose. Our brains are just too strong and powerful. They know what our body wants and it overpowers everything else. Again I'm sorry

When I go into a bar and see the singles scene I swear the lyrics 'Everyone here knows everyone here is thinking about somebody else. Well it's best if we all keep this under our heads" fit's the scene like a glove. This song makes me think that my heartbreak isn't the only one that matters and I see friends in just ordinary strangers. Since we are all trying to find love and get by in this cruel world. So I always play this song on the jukebox.

@JesusLovesGunViolence I don't think I actually quite knew or understood exactly what the song was saying. I just liked it for whatever reason. Typical teen heartbreaks and "love" that you don't even understand then, but u think u do. Then ur an adult and you REALLY get it and understand. Idk. It like I never really understood this song until I heard it again a few weeks ago. Can't really explain it. Just life things I guess. 🤷‍♀️

So my interpretation of this song is that there are three very different parts/stages. At first he is trying to rationalize that what he is doing is normal. The second is him asking if he’s the only one thinking this way. The third is that he’s decided that there’s no “getting back to good.” Honestly, it’s heartbreaking. It kind of reminds me of someone who rationalizes cheating, but realizes in the end that they messed up. There is no getting back to good.
@bluecarrotrm
@bluecarrotrm 3 жыл бұрын
I think that, if you really scrutinize the lyrics, you will see that your phases of the song are right but the context is deeper. He is definitely trying to convince someone to leave with him and he is using that to convince himself to leave with them... But thats not all. Each verse he is less specific in his words but his meaning cuts closer to his personal feelings that he alludes to when he says "I won't go there 'cause I don't want to." In verse one he is trying to not think about why he is trying to talk them into coming, that being his old relationship has imploded. His summery is that he's lonely and he can't fix his old relationship anyway. In Verse two we see more of his feelings as he tris to assert that the person he is talking to can't claim control over him. He is just getting through the hurt caused by the previous love trying to tell him what he could think and how he was allowed to feel. The puzzle of the death of his relationship is coming together. In verse three we get the last pieces: he had been thinking of infidelity. I think its implied that he hadn't ACTED on the thoughts because of verse two and the line "everyone hides SHADES of shame." However, old flame learned of his thoughts and counted it as being as bad as actually following through on the fantasy and terminated the relationship. His mind replays to that point and he is forced to confront what he didn't want to talk about in verse one. Its over now. He tries to return to his first verse intent, "lets keep this under our belts" but he can't convince himself and he falls back into the despair hes been trying to escape with the whole scene. It's over now and he can't get back to good. Sorry for the wall of text. I've been stewing on these lyrics for a couple of hours and needed to spew them out somewhere.

It's about how we think about cheating, not actually cheating. You never know what you got till it's gone. The grass is always greener on the other side. We always long for what we can't have. It's basic human nature and explains that we are all self-destructive.
@raybrooks4618

This song takes me back to the time it came out. I worked a factory and had a crush there bigger than the one I had at home on my wife. To me then it was soley about cheating either emotionally or physically. The more I've listened to it, it's deeper than that. "Everyone here hides shades of shame" tells me that he's saying no one can be accusive bc "we all have something going on, and this is mine, mind your own shit." He also everyone is wondering what it's like to be with somebody else, which, unless that's literal in a crowd, it's an assumption only to justify ones actions, bc clearly not everyone thinks about someone else in the way of cheating.

I love the part when he sings “Anyone here’s to blame. Everyone gets caught up in the pleasures of the pain. And everyone hides shades of shame. But looking inside we’re the same. But we’re all grown now and we don’t know how to get it back to good.” Happiness is a choice, and we have to take some responsibility for what we put ourselves through after bad things happen. When society proclaims happiness is in material things, society is wrong. Choose the things that last to make you happy.

My husband of 31 years of marriage past on Nov. 9th 2022, I love this band to many songs that are just great. Bobby and I always listen to them. This song is exactly what I am going though. My husband was my soul mate. This is a prefect bar song for people who find themselves in a bar just trying to forget. Good to know that a person such as Rob Thomas with his writers and band can arrange a song with so much truth.

Brenda Pierce I can't really pinpoint the meaning of this song. My interpretation is this: It kinda sounds like it's saying that everyone sometimes has thoughts of being with someone other than their romantic partner ("Everyone here knows everyone here is thinking 'bout somebody else"). People are often hypocritical when they judge others for this even though they do it themselves ("Everyone here hates everyone here for doing just like they do"). Ultimately, though, giving in to those thoughts and actually cheating isn't worth it because they end up with no one in the end ("And I'm lonely now and I don't know how to get it back to good). And when he says to "keep this under our heads" and "keep this quiet instead" he's saying to keep the thoughts to just thoughts rather than acting on them. I don't know if I'm right or not.
