The inquisitive, soft piano intro with the melody going from high to low in a repetitive manner sets that tone. Also, the way the end of the lines linger in just the right way, the use of past tense (by use of "don't you believe her now" providing the viewpoint of the song is retrospective), and the brighter tones used in the middle/end of the song all continue that effect quite nicely. The faraway “ohh”s that he leans back from the mic like Train does for some things lends to the same vibe really well. I'm fairly sure there's probably more to it than just that, but there's the "some reason" that you didn't actually ask for.

This is my theme song. I know it was written about his wife and her strength, but it basically describes us to a tee. I’m an alter in a DID system. We were born in Leo season (if you have a negative viewpoint just because a sign was mentioned, please take that vibe elsewhere) at Bethpage on LI in NY, so we’ve got that magnetic “je ne sais quoi” (all of the friends over the years always say something like this), and us alters together are exactly like we’re a constellation of stars that don’t connect (he *was* saying you have to be a bit delusional to get through life sometimes). Also, the “world inside her head” bit is actually literally true in DID (we call it the inner world), and on top of that some of us are a bit fantastical (I’m an Elf, for example). But despite all of the hardships (and unimaginable trauma), we’re still here today, and we’re very strong. I was taking a shower and listening to Matchbox on Spotify because I had Unwell and 3AM on the brain so when I heard this song come on and listened to the lyrics I was like… “wait… how did he know…?” 🤣
