H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... We're up to week 140 (of 291) for our favorite classic game show. These episodes were taped on March 21, 1976 and first aired in late April of 1976. This week's panel finds our three stalwart regulars all in their places with bright, shiny faces. Plus: ~~Semi-regular Patti Deutsch is back after eight weeks. Patti is currently 1 for 2 in the H/H match department. ~~Joey Bishop returns for his second week (of 5, all in 1976). He made his debut just nine weeks ago (651-655), and wasn't chosen for the H/H. ~~Finally, for the third week in a row, there's another one-week only guest panelist in seat #4: Janice Lynde. (Yes, from Janice Pennington last week to Janice Lynde this week. At least they didn't have to spend any time or money changing the name in front.) I wonder about this string of new faces. Were the producers simply trying to spice things up with some pretty young women? Or if they were trying to cultivate some new returning guest panelists, I wonder why these three (Pat Delany, Janice Pennington, and Janice Lynde, although there have been several other similar celebs who spent a single week in that fourth seat in the past) never reappeared? Did they not enjoy the show? Were they too busy in their careers? Did the producers not deem them a good fit for the panel? Looking ahead this week, I'd love to see Patti play (and match) in the H/H again this week. And I'd like to see a contestant (or two) choose Charles! After all, he hasn't played for 13 weeks now - since 631! And his track record of actually matching in the H/H is 6 or 7 percentage points better than either Brett's or Richard's. And yet, Richard (with the lowest rate of matching among the regulars and sixth-seat semi-regulars) has been chosen 404 times, Brett 58 times, and Charles only 44 times. But most of all this week, I just want to sit back and enjoy some 1970s-style ________! Today's action: Our champion wins her second game thanks to Patti Deutsch who had the *first and only* matching answer the whole game! Today's audience match question: "All _______" (My thoughts: in the Family, together, -'s fair in love and war, or nothing, the way) The celebs: Richard (in the Family), Charles (American), and Brett (or nothing) The choice: In the Family The answers: Together, Or nothing, In the Family She earns a second shot at $5,000. Last time she chose Richard, but they didn't match. I bet she'll try him again... Yup. We start the week off with Richard hoping to give away $5,000 of the producers' money! Today's H/H question: "Get out of __________" (Hmm. I feel like Brett with this one: "I'm torn between two good answers!" 1) Get out of bed. 2) Get out of here! Also, we used to say "Get out of town!" to mean "Seriously? Are you kidding me?" -- Well, I thought of bed first, so I'll stick with that.) The contestant is smiling, apparently having already thought of her answer. Richard's lips are pursed in thought, but he quickly files his answer (the camera cut away while he was writing, but it looks like a short answer). As he generally does, Richard looks over to seat #6... Our champion says she has two answers (I can relate). She opts for "get out of here." Well, she and I don't match this time (we did yesterday), but that's not important. It's up to Richard now... (Then she says her second answer was "get out of town"!) Huh. Richard said "Town" too. No match today. Here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note, for tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Betty - 50% (17 wins in 34 attempts). TIE: Fannie - 50% (10 wins in 20 attempts). Charles - 47.7% (21 wins in 44 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 41.4% (24 wins in 58 attempts). Richard - 40.5% (164 wins in 405 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 696, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

Sandy, oh my God, in the "Foxy Lady" shirt! I was in middle school in 1976, and Sandy reminds me of every girl I had a crush on, who never noticed me. That really takes me back. Oh, I did alright eventually.

Joey Bishop wasn't kidding when he said he hadn't worked. His sitcom was remarkably unfunny, and then all I remember him doing was substituting for Johnny Carson. They (another network) gave him his own late night show to compete with the Tonight Show...and it BOMBED! 😆

Joey Bishop, was an American entertainer who appeared on television as early as 1948 and eventually starred in his own weekly comedy series playing a talk/variety show host, then later hosted a late-night talk show with Regis Philbin as his young sidekick on ABC. He also was a member of the "Rat Pack" with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Peter Lawford. (Listed #96 of 100 top comedians)

To be fair anything that went against The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson bombed. Johnny owned late night for 30 years. Joey burned a bridge by hosting his own show. Johnny never asked him back after that.
