Richard gets a lot of flack for his ambition, but seriously... he was so funny, so quick witted, and ultimately so successful on Family Feud. He paid his dues and it was reasonable for him to want more. People don't become entertainers because they LACK ego, after all.

Yea, wasn't the first choice for FF until Richard heard that were hiring Bill Shatner to host it, then got his lawyer to send a letter saying if you don't give FF to Richard then he is going to withdraw emotion from the show like he did to get out his contact.. He was their first choice and he had 5 tries before that one.

Well it is a fact that not only did "Family Feud" eclipse "Match Game" for the #1 rated game show, it was still on the air after "Match Game" shut down. Heck, even after it's successor "Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour" came and went, the Feud was STILL airing!

In an earlier episode, I mentioned that MG was only nominated for two Emmy's....Gene was nominated three times....1975 (losing out to Peter Marshall), 1977 (losing to Bert Convy) and 1978 (losing out to Richard Dawson)....the show was popular...just not with the people who were on the Emmy committees....

Probably never won an Emmy because he let Brett and Richard take over the show. He played second fiddle to them, plus he was kind of mean to the audience. He got away with being a dirty old man in those days, touching and kissing some of the attractive celebrity guests. He also seemed a little arrogant and know it all. However, except for Brett, it was a good show.
