H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... This is week 137 (of 291) for our favorite classic game show. These episodes were taped on March 6, 1976 and first aired in late March and early April of 1976. This week's panel finds our three stalwart regulars all in their places with bright, shiny faces. Plus: ~~Semi-regular Fannie Flagg holds down the sixth seat for a second consecutive week. ~~Scoey Mitchell is back for his seventh week (of 12 total). We last saw him in episodes 636-640. He has yet to participate in a H/H question. He's sporting a new look this week with some facial hair! ~~Susan Howard appears for her second and final week. Her MG debut was 7 weeks ago in episode 646, and she hasn't seen any H/H action yet either. I'd love to see Fannie get called on for the H/H this week! And/or some other fun and exciting surprises in the head-to-head match department! Well, let's sit back, relax, and enjoy some 1970s-style entertainment! ~~MG trivia: Fannie states (~ 8:40) that Amanda Blake was from Alabama (and Gene repeats the statement without questioning it). I'm not sure if Fannie was simply kidding around, but according to Wikipedia, Blake was born in Buffalo, NY and attended Pomona College in California prior to becoming an actress. After her retirement, she lived in Phoenix. I can't find any Alabama connection... Of course, Amanda Blake appeared on Match Game '74 in seat #4 for one week only: 346-350. She was chosen once for the head-to-head that week, but didn't match. Joyce Bulifant was the sixth-seat semi-regular that week, but Fannie was on the prior week and again two weeks later. Today's action: (First, I'd point out that this show was taped 13 days after the prior show, so the contestants had to cool their heels for nearly two weeks before finishing the game they started last time. Also, two panel members changed after the challenger had her first-round question, but before the champion had his. This has always struck me as a potentially unfair wrinkle in the gameplay, given that the two contestants aren't trying to match the same celebrities in a particular round, and one group of celebs is potentially better at matching than the other group, although I don't think it made any difference this time around.) Our champion wins his second game, thanks to a few bottoms and one derriere! Today's audience match question: "Nick _______ " (No way can I come up with 3 answers for this one.) The celebs: Brett (the Greek), Charles (Adams), and Richard (-knack, which he appears to get from glancing at Susan's card ) And Scoey throws in an unsolicited suggestion: "O'Demus." I believe he was referring to Horace Winfred "Nick" Stewart (March 15, 1910 - December 18, 2000) also billed as Nick O'Demus, a TV and film actor known for his role as Lightnin' (Willie Jefferson) on TV's "The Amos 'n' Andy Show" (according to Wikipedia). The choice: -name (He's going it alone! Which I think is a wise choice, given the mediocre-to-lousy suggestions he got from our regulars!) The answers: Name (!), Adams (!), the Greek (!!!) Well, I take it all back! Brett had the top answer and CNR gave us the middle one. Only Richard's answer failed to appear, but that's hardly unusual given he was the third celeb called on. I honestly thought his answer would be there instead of the other two! Interestingly, last time our champ called on Fannie, Bill Anderson, and Richard, so he's mixing it up a little bit today by calling on Brett and Charles for the first time. Will this unpredictability carry over to the H/H? To recap, last time he chose Richard and matched for $2,500. (But after he matched, he gave Fannie four quick kisses, so maybe he'll pick her today?) Oh, the suspense is killing me! Roll the video! No unpredictability here. It's Richard again. Despite Richard's match last time, he seems to be having a slightly off streak. Reviewing the past 5 weeks, Richard has played 18 times and matched 7 of those (38.9%). Upon reflection, 38.9% is actually a very decent score for the H/H match. Still, statistically, a contestant would have a better chance of winning with Brett, Charles, or Fannie (there are no stats yet for Scoey or Susan). Today's H/H question: "Touch _______ " (Looking at the champion, I thought of touch football, since he looks so athletic. But I'm not sure how popular/widespread touch football is, so I'll say touch and go.) Richard briefly scratches his head, but is soon writing an answer that looks rather long. Could it be "football"? Richard didn't grow up in the US, and I doubt they played much (American) football of any kind in England. Going back and watching his hand a second time, it sure does look like he's writing "football." The contestant confidently says "Touchdown." Now that I hear it, that sounds like the definitive answer, and the audience seems enthusiastic about it as well. But I honestly think Richard's answer was a good deal longer than just four letters. Well, let's hope I'm wrong... Amazing. Richard mentioned my second answer "touch and go" before revealing "Football." (I swear I always put down my guesses before seeing the video or reading any comments.) No match today. Here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Fannie - 52.6% (10 wins in 19 attempts). Betty - 50% (17 wins in 34 attempts). Charles - 47.7% (21 wins in 44 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 41.8% (23 wins in 55 attempts). Richard - 40.5% (160 wins in 395 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 681, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

In the 70s, I used to sell red Bud, gold Bud, cessamean, And thi stick dipped in opium. And that redbud would get you not even realizing where you are that was my favorite! And Scoey appears to be smoking red bud before the show. The movie fire in the sky when Travis Walton got picked up, I had sold him a bag of red bud, And his friends told his friends were not with him when I did it cause I was afraid of his friends. And the sheriff came to my house and wanted a sample so they can test it. To make sure there was no LSD or anything in it. My husband went to Vietnam and everything never smoked weed for years. And we got a hold of some redbud in 2010, and my husband always use his way around and what night we were living in Albuquerque at a time he turned to me and he asked you where are we? LOL! But they don’t make it like that anymore

Brett is right, "shot" doesn't make any sense! But that was a lousy question, what was a good answer? "polish?" I thought "load" was funny, Richard, I thought of that too. Kind of a double entendre there. "Holster?" Not physically possible.
