JJ’s do that, if there’s corrosion on the cathode pin…..any el84 would, but JJ’s are famous for it.

Matchless amps seem to get along better with rugged old stock EL84s and EL34s. Unfortunately, that's not an option for a lot of people, or they aren't aware it's an option.

Hi Lyle, this matchless video series is awesome! Thanks for sharing! 2 questions: what is your opinion on the Celestion neo Creamback 12” 60W speaker? Also, I know you’re not a fan of Mesa boogie, but what do you think of their more “simpler” amps like the Blue Angel and Mark I? Thanks and hope to hear from you take care! 😊

The Neo Creamback is good but a little bright. Haven’t had a Blue Angel in but I would expect the same issues all seem to have. The Mark I has many problems but they are fixable.

Sweet! I was thinking of trying a 12AT7 in place of the first 12ax7 in a Laney Cub 12r but I figured it's probably the same as not turning the gain up all the way: 60 vs 100 in the ax7. I still might try it. Do I need more than one? I've got 3 12ax7s and 2 el84s. Anybody know?

It won't be the same, it's fine to just get a single 12at7 and experiment with different positions. However, it might also be too much of a difference. 5751 tubes are better suited for the task, I hear.
