Elvis said Andy was one of his favorite impersonators of himself. Not surprised, he imitated Elvis since he was seven.

The year was 1956 and the new single release to hit the top of the charts and hit the nation like a storm was the song "Heartbreak Hotel". First release by Elvis at the age of 21.....and imitated by boys around the country including a young man named Andrew Kaufman...age 7 😎

I went there to be a member of the studio audience back then. Everyone was a big Kaufman fan. He finally appeared on stage and walked around, to laughs, without a real sketch to play, like looking for inspiration, but he seemed distracted and depressed and walked off. The stage manager said that Andy wasn't feeling well or something like that. It showed he was an artist, given to moods. The show also made clear that Dick Van Dyke was/is hugely talented. I'm so glad I made it, after waiting in a line for a few hours. The stage, in the SF Valley, had a bunch of sitcoms being taped at once, and Van Dyke's show was one we got into.

Prior to Andy's appearance on any TV show, I saw him as an unbilled opening act at a small music venue in Long Island called My Father's Place. No one in the audience knew who Andy was and for a while we couldn't figure out if we should feel sorry for this strange foreign guy. After his Elvis impersonation and Mighty Mouse skit, it all became clear that he was putting us on, he brought the house down. I can't remember who the main act was, all anyone could talk about for days was Andy!

I loved Andy Kaufman in the sitcom, Taxi as "Latka." He was so hilarious. I had the unexpected experience of auditioning Andy backstage at a late hour just before the show closed for Saturday evening at the Nameless Coffeehouse in Massachusetts in the mid 1970's. I didn't realize who he was back then & he went on stage to do a drum routine. I was watching television some years later & saw Andy do the exact same routine. At this point, I realized who he was. Dick Van Dyke was always one of my favorite performers when I was a child.

@@philm.6113 No, there were not many. I was in Vegas since '69 seeing Elvis until his last engagement there Dec. '76. We went from one end to the other of the strip seeing shows, every trip out there to see Elvis. No impersonator's. They slowly began around the last year of his life. One or two. Then after he died a few more. It took a while until it became ridiculous, as it is now. Not sure if you know this, but regular singers going on Late Night Shows did not do Elvis songs. First time one did, it was Letterman and he said.."you doing an Elvis song?" Like unheard of. Somewhere in that 10 year period they became more plentiful. Sickening is more like it. Before I came to detest them, I went several times to Legends in Vegas with Elvis, Marilyn Lennon and others. It was a good show with a respectable Elvis. This was way after Elvis had passed. So Andy came along and Elvis saw him on TV and liked what he did. Nobody ever like Andy. He was nothing like the wannabes. I will never forget the first time I saw him on Johnny Carson. I could not believe it. I have yet to see that particular show.

Omg.. utterly brilliant Dick Van Dyke‘s face is a picture of joy at the end. I think the Andy Kaufman passing just might be the biggest loss to the comedy world ever. Can you imagine how funny this guy would’ve been in the present era through his eyes and comedy brain.

I grew up with Andy as a teenager, and I and many others never felt we were the but of the joke. We just enjoyed his acting. His sense of humor for the 70s and early 80s was ground breaking for that time, at least in the mainstream media. As teens we knew that he was probably going to offend someone, but we felt this refreshing to a certain degree.

Elvis was still alive and LOVED Andy Kaufman's impersonation of him. Elvis would die a year later in 1977 and what has followed since his death is thousands of impersonators all over the world. But Andy did it first he did very well, and he did it with the Kings approval!

What's amazing is that when Dick introduces and speaks to Andy here, he's actually speaking to Andy's character of Ladka, so Andy is here doing an impersonation of a fictional character about to do an impersonation of Elvis.

A great bit. The variety shows, talk shows and holiday specials of the past were great platforms for up and coming artists to get exposure. Since we had limited channels and choices, these kinds of shows generally had big viewing audiences which could result in a big break for talent. Programming is so fragmented today.

that is the best Elvis i have ever seen - i mean really, Andy had the whole thing down. and you can watch how his character comes back in his eyes. he just transforms from Elvis’s face to his own face, and his whole stance changes back to, “Thank you verymuch.” (verymuch being one word :). he was totally amazing!! and ‘lives on’ on KZbin 🙃 (he never smoked - it really was a tragedy. 😐)

@lonesomecrow And he was the ONLY impersonator Elvis said that about. No one did it like Andy, with the funny stuff, and then becoming Elvis. It was hilarious, and he was good. There weren't many back in the day, but from all I have read, I don't think Elvis cared for them and wished for them to do their own thing. This from a letter he wrote, very, very sweetly to a young person asking him what he thought of him doing an impersonation. Elvis could not have been kinder in telling him what he thought. He was very delicate not to hurt his feelings.
