This Workshop shows you how to write clear, compelling user-facing content - because better writing leads to better experiences. Create your own content matrix while learning best practices for common UI patterns such as onboarding, notifications, labels, errors, and localization. Lessons focus on English writing, and can be applied across many contexts. Advanced topics such as testing content, conversation design, and machine learning feature writing are covered briefly.

11:30 Instead of writing Soil & Water, it is better to write Water & Soil... Easier and more eloquent to pronounce... Always start with the most difficult words first, then follow up with easier ones...

Soil & Water sounds better when I pronounce it, I wonder why

I am just studying to transition from speech pathology to UX writing, and I don’t have knowledge of OC’s statement re: whether more/less complex first is shown to be more appealing, but I think this example can’t be applied to the cited concept. Assuming OC referred to syllables, while soil is typically viewed as a one-syllable word, if you listen carefully to the production (at least, American English/not Southern “ol”), the transition from the diphthong “oi” to the dark “l” at the end often embeds a “y” consonant sound, changing the production to something like “soyal” (rhyming with “royal” and “oil”). Thus, contrary to what comes up on a ‘net search, this word actually has an equal syllable # to “water” and may not meet the criteria as a simpler word… so if the principle OC mentioned is generally correct, it might not have bearing here. I do acknowledge he might have been referring to more than # of syllables, however. That said - why preference of listing one first when they are of equal (audible) length? It’s possible that efficiency is responsible for this: the “l” in “soil” is made in the same location of the mouth (behind top/front teeth) as the immediately following “n” that is most/all of what you hear in “and” in that context. It’s possible this makes it feel like it rolls off the tongue more easy than “water and…”. Last thought - SAW order could owe some of its preference to the familiar phrase “like oil and water”… which I believe would be subject to all of the above that made it develop over “like water and oil”.

@@krizh289 every now and then I just have to go max nerd. I was a pediatric speech pathologist so at times I get overly excited when talking to adults about words 😅🤓
