Metals have a strong driving force to crystallize when cooled. However certain alloys have been discovered that when cooled rapidly will not crystallize and thus form a metallic glass. These bulk metallic glasses have a variety of interesting properties from a high hardness to a high coefficient of restitution. Applications for these new materials are just beginning to be explored.
This video is a content resource for the Impact of Materials on Society (IMOS) course, an introductory level undergraduate course about Materials Science and Engineering. But it can be used independent of the IMOS course in K-12 education, informal science education and outreach as well.
The IMOS course was developed through a partnership with faculty at the University of Florida, the Materials Research Society and the Department of Defense. The IMOS course leads the way in building broader bridges between research in engineering, the humanities and social sciences. This approach creates successful technologies that address critical social issues in ways that respect human values and belief systems.

This is a wonderfully produced and informative video. I am astonished that the views are as low as they are. Great work.

Hi. This is an excellent and enlightening video. I have also study on metallic glass for many years. I am about to finish my doctoral thesis. What applications of metallic glass currently exist in spacecraft? For example, is the shield you mentioned in the video already used? Thank you so much for your interest.

Gulf club was not a successful commercialization of BMGs due to the insufficient toughness, as mentioned by W. Johnson in a Nature interview.

The funny thing with the longterm perspective is, that under given circumstances no commercial enterprise would use it, as its longterm sustainability counters the principles of capitalists "life cycle management" and the natural law of planned obsolescence. Thankfully buying Gilletes beautiful one timers. lol.

I love it! :) It is both sad and hilarious to see its application in the oil industry, though! LOL would be a proper response, I guess?! :D When was it discovered, 50s? And it is 2018... Better late than never :D

Interesting to see Liquidmetal here. LQMT should be a great investment for the future.

“Liquidmetal”? Sounds like a cheap, imitation, Terminator movie rip-off. Watt idiot would be DUMB ENOUGH to invest in such a Company? I mean, seriously! Watt? Haha, oh now I get, “Watts Watt”...figures.
