People wonder why old farts like me say 1980s-early 1990s metal is the best. Bands like Watchtower, Voivod, and Confessor were out there paving the road. You just can’t duplicate the rawness and early experimentation that you see here. These guys were clearly sailing in uncharted waters.

They were playing Energetic Disassembly songs since 1983 so they're the real pioneers of the genre. Real respect to them!

MateusCTR yes, along with 'Ryche in 1985 (they also played "walk in the shadows" in '85) so these 2 were the first Progsters. Then, Fates just after '86 with Guardian started becoming Prog as well, (demo of Nothing left to say)

In my opinion Energetic Disassembly (1985) and Rage for Order (1986) are the first 2 albums that can be called prog metal, 100% of them. I believe Fates Warning started a bit latter in the genre with No Exit (1988). There were other bands playing proto-prog metal in late 80's like Majesty (DT), Sacred Blade, Slauter Xstroyes, Aslam (Psychotic Waltz), Sieges Even and so on but Watchtower, Queensrÿche and Fates Warning are the real pioneers of the genre.

MateusCTR I agree. Though Perfect Symmetry came out in 1989 bro, not 1988. Before that we had 1988 FW's NO EXIT which was Power/Prog Thrash, but since 1987 they were working on their PROG metal EPIC 'The Ivory Gates Of Dreams" (off No Exit). So FW are probably the 3rd Prog band after Watchtower and 'Ryche. I have some Aslan but they seems more Thrash to me, the same as the 1st Sieges Even. (I find Steps as their 1st real Prog LP). Btw, I have this Control and Resistance CD and in the booklet their drummer wore a Soviet Union CCCP t-shirt there in Texas right in the middle of the Cold War era. That's non-comformist !

If this was January '85, I believe this was the Cameo Theater. My band Karion was on the bill too.

I was at a lot of those Ritz gigs... (and playing warmup). Billy is still my favorite guitarist with them... There was one dude who recorded a couple of them. I tried to contact him when he did an Austin Access TV shows later (Not Dave Prewitt, but he did try to help). 🔥🎸🔥

This shit happened 10 years before I was born and it still blows my 26 year old metalhead's brain lol. I was just messing with Cynic, Atheists, Violent Dirge, and the like, but now my book is about to end.

I liked Alan Tecchio better, but Jason was good in high notes as well

Billy White should've been the next Jimi Hendrix, but he just couldn't quite get lucky with success.
