In this video, teacher Erika shows you how to make your own construction paper buttons. Next, sort the buttons by color. Then, sort the buttons by the number of button holes by counting how many button holes (or dots) are on each button. During this activity your child will learn math skills such as sorting, classifying, counting and number sense/quantity.
Materials:
Paper buttons cut out of four colors of construction paper with 1, 2, 3, and 4 button holes (made with hole punch or dots drawn on with marker).
Or you can print buttons from template and cut out. 1-4 hole counting sheet and color sorting sheet (optional).

Here are some questions you can ask your child as well as ways to extend this activity:
What color is that button?
Where does that button match?
What else do you see that is the color of that button?
How many holes (dots) are on the button?
Which other button has the same amount of holes?
Which button has the most holes? Which button has the least holes?
What shape are the buttons?
How many buttons do you have?
Where do we find buttons? What do buttons do?
Have your child practice buttoning their own clothes.
Count the buttons on real clothes.
