You can get there a little bit faster directly by squaring the left and right side of the original equation. The x and -x cancel, and you're left with: 5 + 2sqrt(4 - x)sqrt(x + 1) = 9, thus sqrt(4 - x)sqrt(x + 1) = 2. Square both sides again - the 4's cancel, leaving x(x - 3) = 0.
