EE speaking of my tools; college in the 80s. It was a Staradler 0.7mm HB pencil, a white brick eraser of the same brand and 'green-sheet' the light green pad of engineering paper. Finally a programmable calculator, HP-15c, or as my well funded contemporaries had a HP-41C. The PC with Excel, or MATLB has replaced that calculator, I also use post-it or even a reactors marketing pad for ideas. I like the smaller 'toe tags' also from 3M for marking book pages. The remaining items continue. I use a tablett on a floor stand, AND. I'm ordering that book easel, THANK YOU. These, a clear mind and quiet continuous focus.

May I suggest having higher end vinyl erasers, too? They erase cleanly and are a joy. As a wise person once told me, "never write more in the morning than you can erase in the afternoon.
@adelheidmarlowe9079

My Tools: 00 - a good vinyl eraser - a good eraser makes me fearless. 01 - a box of very sharp decent quality wooden pencils, HB or #2. I sometimes cut off the pencil's eraser system and sharpen both ends - the erasers that come with pencils are typically lousy, in my opinion. Additionally, I sharpen half a dozen when I'm settling in to work so as not to interrupt the flow when they bust or get dull. 02 - an electric pencil sharpener 03 - paper with an easy to write and erase "tooth". Typically, I'll use unlined paper but a quad pad and some sheets of isometric paper for sketching certain figures or tables are useful. Each of my sheets starts by writing the date, say, in the upper right corner. I format this as: YYYYMMDD (eg, 20230519 for today: 19 May 2023) so that after parking the paper (after maybe getting stuck or bored) in a loose leaf notebook - after a couple months or years, Future Me will be able to ensure the sheets can get back in the order I was thinking about them. 04 - a small straight edge 05 - a small drafting triangle 06 - a clipboard to hold and organize the papers. Also, I occasionally use colored pencils in red, green, and light blue. One might find them handy when editing or adding notes to a previously generated sheet (possibly photocopied), in order that one can easily see the editing marks.

My son uses an ipad with an apple pencil to do his work - that way you can erase and move stuff without having to start again. Also can import images etc and make your work neater and wastes less time - can print out when finished. He uses an app called notability (useful for recording audio and links timelime to your writing so easy to find right place to start and stop lecture to relisten to stuff.)

The book stand had me do a facepalm. I am so getting a music/book stand now. I like to sit and read to study, but I got a 24"x36" easel white board with the flipchart clip for working problems on. Something about being on my feet and pacing. As a bonus, the clip allows me attach a gaming battlemat with the grids on it(graphing on antique parchment look is kino). Oh lamented paper with grease pencil is nice too- wax works well but needs some elbow grease to remove.

Ha, I made it all the way to a degree in math with a small portable chalk board, paper and pencil; no PC and no calculator. Never used pens for math homework. Also had a slide rule which was seldom used. These were math courses (not engineering) so seldom gave answers in complete, numerical form. My room mate was Fred Flintstone.

I only ever used my Nspire at home when checking my answers. However, my professor in my finance class didn't care about my calculator because I still had to show all my work, and on timed exams, typing a lot of things into a calculator is not the best use of my time--especially if I miss something like a parenthesis. The Nspire is super sensitive to that. Your book holder, how much weight does that handle? I'm asking because I've not found a good one to hold some of my thicker books. My best one was plastic, but it was bulky, even when folded down--but even then, it couldn't withstand 3 teething mastiffs.

Calculator? I did a very technical degree and used a calculator exactly once and that was to save on waste paper at the time 😂 I used and still use a good quality fountain pen with decent ink. I've always had a logbook to hand for all work but in Matlab and other environments i tend to have a text file that I keep around to develop solutions in, save in case i need it later. It works for me. Most day to day things boil down to back of the envelope calculations and most by hand, in the head and rough approximations to gain an insight. I don't personally think that calculators help all that much to be very honest. A pen, pencil and paper and your brain are what you need 🙂

Why should I, a layman who is not seeking a mathematica degree, learn math? Not trying to be combative, just wondering how math might benefit me. I never cared for it in high school and skirted around it as much as possible in college, but I'm wondering if I should try to relearn and expand on what I know. What makes math more useful than other things I could learn in my free time?

A biochemistry degree holder here, started with pre-algebra as my 2023 resolution, about crossing the precalculus to calculus rubicon -a chapter shy. My rate of understanding other things outside of maths has increased drastically, solved a math problem a work; though its a simple one, but it has been passed around with no avail. I don't know how far I'd go, but if going this few months in gave this much benefits, then I guess I'm here to stay.

I bought the TI-nsipre CX II and really regret it. Not because of the CAS software - it's OK, but I'm usually at my desk and will use Mathematica on my PC if I want to check something. I mostly regret it because they needed to have a full alphabetic keyboard on this thing, which means that there wasn't enough space for dedicated keys for the things you usually have on a scientific calculator. Lots of extra keypresses are required to enter quite ordinary things. Add to that the processor isn't fast enough to keep up with your keypresses if you try and type fast. Ughh.

I strongly reccomend the Ti-84 plus CE, It's worth the extra money, I call it the ferrari edition, because its got bells and whistles you didn't know you needed. It makes organizing your work on the calculator so much easier, No Alpha -> Store. Just scroll up and hit the damned nested output How many parenthesis do you need? No worries calculator does it for you Worried about making sure your fractions are correct? The calculator will display it in a fraction for you. I had the Ti-84 and it just makes me mad when I see one now. I'd figuratively saw off my arm with a pen knife for the TI84+ CE
