Hi, I am interested in getting clarification in this video between 17 and 18 min for the question, correct answer by the contestant was declared wrong and a wrong answer announced. Correct answer is 2100 sq ft announced wrong and gave 1500 sq ft as correct answer. Please clear this
@BinyIII4 жыл бұрын
@@vasanthadevimanohararajah5160 Hey, sorry I'm late but I'll clarify this for you. Ok, so the question says the following; 'Jim, Jeannie and their 5 children live in a 700-ft^2 apartment. They want to move house for which the ratio of square feet to children is triple the apartment's ratio of square feet to total people. How many square feet could their house be?' So, the thing most people would do is spot 700-ft^2 and triple and do (700-ft^2)x3 which would give you 2100-ft^2 (which is what the first boy who answered the question most likely would have done), but that is unfortunately wrong as there is no logic behind this. This is how you would logically figure the question out: Let's focus on the first part as it says 'ratio of square feet to children'. We can formulate an expression, so we could say that the square feet of the new house they're looking for (the answer) is x and that the amount of children is 5 so when put together it becomes x:5 Now, moving on it says, the value of x:5 is three times that of the 'apartment's ratio of square feet to total people'. Originally, it would be 700-ft^2:7 , 7 being the total number of people in the household (Jim, Jeannie and the 5 kids), but because it says the value of x:5 is triple 'apartment's ratio of square feet to total people' meaning we do (700-ft^2x3):7 which is 2100-ft^2:7. Now lets go back to the question. It says 'ratio of square feet to children is triple the apartment's ratio of square feet to total people'. It mentions the word 'is', meaning the values are equal. So, x:5=1200-ft^2:7 The common multiple of 7 and 5 is 35 so 7(x:5)=5(2100-ft^2:7) which when fully simplified gives us 7x:35=10500:35 This means 7x=10,500. Divide 7 on both sides and you get x=1500. By the way, although this is not an efficient method it still outlines the concept so hope you understand this.

It's entirely expected, Luke is displaying clear signs of autism, you'll also find that when someone's brain is so specifically dedicated to a function like maths they become inept in other aspects of life such as social interaction, humour, creativity, stress management etc while it's cool what they can do people need to remember that like everything in life, there's always a compromise.

@@anne. well obviously. EVERYONE has a time in their life when they´re under an immense amount of stress, its not just them. They aren't the only people with stress. I´d rather be stressed about a math competition than stressed about how I´m gonna afford rent when I´m a single parent with four kids living in a tiny apartment or stressed about having to get my leg amputated. A math competition isn´t all people have to stress about. I meant people who spend every second of their entire life not joking around for a second, not in a few hours.

That was me in grade school. Some teachers were fine with it, others weren't. In high school, I got locked into algebra 2 for two years because of a teacher they paired me with repeatedly. Homework counted as 10% of the grade, extra credit was 10% of the grade (witch is bs when it should have been extra), in-class assignments were 20% and tests were 60%. The homework was easy and to show work I would just look up the problem and copy it down, the answers I got on my own, and most of the in-class stuff was easy, but the tests... so the way they worked were you had 10-20 problems, never more, never less, and you had to solve them 1, then 2, then 3, etc, and if you missed or showed incorrect work on, let's say problem 5, then questions 6-20 were not available to you and would be counted as wrong even if you got the right answer and showed work. Because of this teach I gave up on math for my senior year. I took some khan classes during my free time as a TA to remember everything and prep for college. In college, I got top of my class first year and tutored many fellow students. To this day I hate that man for holding me and many other students back because he had a unique testing system.

@Alice Ling26 the chance of you being socially awkward is probably much higher if you get homeschooled, as you do not learn to socielly interact with peers or really with any peole apart from your family (ofcourse you can still have friends etc. But the amount of social interaction will be way less then in school usually). Not knowing or being bad at social interaction if you hadn't had much is going to be probable. Ofcourse it doesn't mean that is the only way why one could be socially anxious, you can also be extremely self aware and lack confidence etc. Which can all be part of your personality even if you go to school.

Don't feel so bad. All these kids are doing is using heuristics, which are tools, or rules of thumb, used to shorten a problem solving process, where you can solve a problem just by looking at it. Just like we humans use heuristics to decide if a situation is safe or unsafe - all within a matter of seconds. I'm not devaluing anything these kids are doing. They are obviously extremely smart, hard working, and overall good problem solvers. But if you practiced ANYTHING like these kids do, you would be just as good at them. Plus, most of the math they are doing isn't super useful. Have a great day.

@Ash Ash The fact that this math can be done with a calculator isn't what makes it useless lol. ( 12 - sqrt n ) / ( 4 - sqrt 7 ) = m 12 - sqrt n = ( 4 - sqrt 7 )* m 12 - sqrt ( n ) = 4m - m sqrt 7 ofc, one solution is when 4m = 12 which produces m = 3. this gives a value of n = 3^2 * 7 = 63 the other solution which gives n as an integer is when m = 0. This gives n = 12^2 = 144 adding these solutions together gives 144 + 63 = 207.
