As an undergrad, every Prof wants you to buy some book or other. I bought just 2: - Thomas' "Calculus" - Kreyszig's "Advanced Engineering Mathematics".
@alanbaker6098 Жыл бұрын
100% agree. Kreyszig was the book we used for the two semesters of math review during Master’s Mechanical Engineering at Purdue a couple decades ago. Another reason to study Fourier analysis is the numerical implementation in FFT is used everywhere is signal processing. Another topic complex analysis … the complex form of harmonic forcing functions (like a sine wave time history forcing a beam to vibrate) is used to immediately get to magnitude and phase of response… profoundly insightful for applications. Good luck!

You'll do great in Calc III I would bet. The only really hard part is grasping the parts on Jacobians (change of variables) and the Divergence/Curl/Stokes/Greens Theorems, but those are usually at the end of the course. Just make sure you focus your early self study on knowing how to understand vector-valued functions and the ideas of partial derivatives. At least you shouldn't have to encounter any Series/sequences material, if that is something you may have dreaded from Calc II as do a lot of people.

I think that an interesting way to do the problem sets for a maths note book would be to have two sets per section. Only one set would have the answers. The other would be left as an exercise to the reader. Notable notes. The problem set with solutions is there to prevent large difficulty spikes (sometimes the problems without solutions are also really difficult but are similar{integrating 1/x^n vs. 1/c^n +1}) The other set doesn’t have provided solutions to the professors either. “The proof is trivial and is left as an exercise to the reader”

I had a course on this book in 1973. For a Metronic Engineer I would suggest the KZbin channel, Control Bootcamp and his main KZbin channel as well. The KZbin channel is taught by a Professor from the University of Washington. Very hands on a practical. There are years of youtube videos including numerical techniques as well as nonlinear control. The only thing missing is senarios where the motor has finite power and integrator windup. These youtube videos are years of control theory problems. The professor has a PHD in applied math and there is a rigous math foundation presented.

Most important areas for engineering are undoubtably calculus, differential equations and linear algebra, which is why you'll find them in every engineering mathematics book. IMO, Kreyszig is a bit too advanced. I mean you can look at the contents and judge for yourself, but I wouldn't pick it up until you've gone through all the subjects in a standard engineering math book.

A question for the general audience. For my application I needed a registry which looks more and more like a graph data base. Are there any work in the fields of graph algorithims which give guiadance on how to setup a knowledge base. Currently I use a tree based system, which has limitations. My times I solve a problem and find out that if I had the relevant math then the problem would have been solved much quicker. A lot of Engineering Math is stuck at the Morse and Fresbauch level. Three excellent math volumes so that engineers could understand Radar. The time has come for more famous books to be written. For example cad designers are using differential geometry to model systems.

Ever seen Orthometric and Isometric drawings? do those, search up drawings of a part described via isometric drawing and the exact same drawing but orthometrically drawn. Try to derive the orthometric drawings from an isometric drawing and vis versa. Sorry, context. Isometric drawings are where basically all angles are 120 and all parallel lines remain parallel regardless of distance, and you see the right, front, and top of the part. Orthometric drawings are a collection of 3 2d drawings of that particular part's right, front, and top views. Do those, cross reference and do worksheets, you'll get on top in no time!

Do you have any popular math book recommendations? There are some books i've recently come across that halfway between popular books and textbooks such as Paul Nahin's "Hot Molecules, Cold Electrons" (its an electrical engineering math book on partial diff equations, fourier transforms but also lots of interesting history about the heat equation and the telegraph etc.) or Eugenia Cheng's "Joy of Abstraction" (its about Category theory). I personally find these books much easier to work through after a hard day of work compared to a dense textbook so was curious if you've read those types of books and have any recommendations.

@SequinBrain Жыл бұрын
After considering this over both a class that used it and a few of these videos that discussed its worth, my only caveat would be that it's not a deep-dive into any of the 5-7 separate subjects it contains, being a hybrid amalgam of several classes one would have already taken in a math oriented degree plan. BUT, if one is even moderately proficient in the subjects, this book is both a good bow tie, wrapping up various ideas and presenting some new ones, as in the Fourier sections, and a refreshing review of the various topics. And as such, it becomes an invaluable stepping stone to whatever lies in the post-grad field of classes. So, even though it's a bit too condensed to work well for anyone who knows nothing about any of it and has no teacher, it should still be in the library of any student even remotely considering being serious about natural philosophy. There's a companion guide to this for both Maple and Mathematica programs, I got the Maple one and it brought some of the ideas to life from the main text, which was nice since we didn't have a teacher. This is the Maple one: www.amazon.com/Maple-Computer-Advanced-Engineering-Mathematics/dp/0471386685/ref=sr_1_1?crid=CYEIRBC57GCP&keywords=maple+computer+guide+to+advanced+engineering+mathematics&qid=1673160295&sprefix=maple+computer+guide+to+advanced+engineering+mathematics%2Caps%2C83&sr=8-1 There's another book with the same title by Zill, our friend from DE, that gives some of the hastily rushed parts of the Kreyzsig book more detail and clarity. It's here: www.amazon.com/Advanced-Engineering-Mathematics-Dennis-Zill/dp/1449691722/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2EG9WFJ195TOQ&keywords=advanced+engineering+mathematics+zill&qid=1673161148&sprefix=advanced+engin%2Caps%2C102&sr=8-3
