The birds chirping added to the beauty of the sound of veena. I was hoping to hear some maths and physics of carnatic music as title gives that idea.

technically, he spoke about the compositions of integers. partitions do not give importance to order. 4 has 5 partitions (1+1+1+1, 1+1+2, 1+3, 2+2, 4) but 8 compositions (as described in the video). generally speaking, the number of compositions of an integer n is 2^{n-1}, but partitions are lot harder to count. but partitions do become more relevant when you consider building korvais and other rhythmic compositions.
