I've spent a considerable amount of time on KZbin watching these kinds of videos and I believe this channel is the best by a significant margin. The demonstrations are patient, reasoned, and thoroughly explained. The topics are--like cleaning rags and laying drop cloth--are thoughtful and frequently overlooked. And I'm not bombarded with ads or incessant reminders to "like and subscribe." Thanks for sharing your expertise.

💥Thanks for the great info. I just mixed some 45 like you did to the same consistency and it hardened up in a bucket in about 15 to 18 minutes just after I finished applying my first pan and was ready to reload with more. I mixed about two pans worth and had to throw the rest away. Do you know what I’m doing wrong? It’s not the first time that the mix set way faster than expected.
@strangerland9791 Жыл бұрын
Maybe your water is too warm. Use very cold water. Colder the better or use 90 mix instead. You can shorten the work time by using warm water but you can't really lengthen the time.
@Jimmy_Cavallo Жыл бұрын
@@strangerland9791 it was cold water from the tap. I’m a contractor of 40 years and I’m so baffled and frustrated seeing how fast it keeps setting. Are you not supposed to use a power mixer? I start perfectly clean every time.
@strangerland9791 Жыл бұрын
@@Jimmy_Cavallo I am guessing power mixer will probably raise the temp due to how fast it mixes the water and powder. Probably slow mixing using the knife will not raise the temp. Of course if you have to mix a lot, I guess use slow speed and try to mix a bit runnier initially? Like I said, I usually just use 90min. and it starts to harden up pretty quick. I would mix runny and by the time I get done at the end (like 20-30 min later), it becomes pretty thick like PB consistency. Try using ice cold water (Put couple of bottles of water in refrigerator - not actual ice) and see if you get longer work time.

@@strangerland9791 Thanhs. I’m just so baffled being how many years of experience I have in the trade. I’ve mixed them tossed half out because it set so quickly

I wish the instructions gave you the amount of water to powder for accurate mixing. Not guessing little by little.
@MatthewspaintingАй бұрын
You could do this by simply measuring you powder, then measuring your water. It will probably take several tries, but you should get your mix in under 6 tries.

In my opinion. Water first, powder second. Runny mud produces smoother mud rathen then starting with a thicker mud. Add more powder to thicken and serve.
@Matthewspainting4 жыл бұрын
Brian Link I am glad that works for you Brian. That has not worked for us in the past, but has created more lumps and seemed to take more time trying to guess how much powder to add to get the right consistency.

Ratio water to powder?

I have never measured. It becomes second nature after a half dozen tries. That is a good idea though. One could simply by measuring cups figure this out.

My mixture always hardens too fast and turns into peanut butter consistency, with lumps in it. Usually within 6 minutes it's unusable for me.
@Matthewspainting2 жыл бұрын
Try 90 minute. It does not set up so fast. Also, add water sooner throughout the mixing process rather than mixing until the water is gone. That is when the chunks form. Also, make sure you are really working your putty knife into the bottom of the mud pan to get any powder that is down there. Some folks like to put some water in first, but I have not tried that.

Great, but you do not say how much water to add. You just throw some in direct for spicket. How much was that. Easy for someone that has done it a hundred times.
@Matthewspainting11 ай бұрын
Good point. Add water until you have a pudding consistency basically. You could practice with measuring cups of powder and water and come up with your ratio.
