As a black man Jamar's logic is a bit off. I would ask him 'Then why do "we" determine the basketball goats? The sport was invented by a white man". But that didn't stop us from making MJ the goat of the sport. And plus Em is a goat cuz he's nice wit it

That know all the players, stats, what college players came from etc. It’s the same with rap. Some people just like catchy music and tunes and some people are here for the REAL science. They want to hear crazy flows and rhymes and schemes. They’re really into rap..The lyricism and the message.

@@bbwolf326 well em is a different case. I think Jamar is saying em is good and lyrical but his music isn’t that impactful to the culture. Like, em is probably better with words than J, but jays music has more impact and resonates more with the culture and people really living it, than em. It’s almost like em was goated by default or by suburban america but for people in the hood, really living what’s rapped about, he isn’t that important. I kind of agree. Like yea em is one of the best lyrical rappers but his message and what he represents only speaks to certain people. Killing your mom and your girlfriend prescription pills, suicide etc isn’t something most people feel or experience (although pills have become more of a problem the last few years). The same way a Italian chef born and raised in Italy, with generations of cooks in the family, can tell you what real traditional Italian cooking is. It’s the same with hip hop. Em raps and he’s good with words but he’s not the soundtrack to people’s lives frfr. Not where it matters the most. Lol the level of contradiction and back pedalling that Jamar has done is outstanding. There is literally 50+ videos of him just talking about Eminem on Vlad's platform and 50+ more elsewhere. There is a video where he said that Nicki Minaj is a better rapper than em and even mentions 10+ others that are at best mediocre. (not saying Nicki can't spit, but this is just a wild opinion to hold lmao). He keeps saying things like: "people in the hood decide who is best." Yet, there is plenty of evidence that suggests that people were playing Em's music early in his career. Moreover, isn't it random to assert that the opinions of people who (without their choice) were born in the hood magically have a more valid opinion than someone else listening to the same music in a different neighborhood? Lmao Music falls under aesthetics and there is an objective measure of saying what's better or worse ... Having an opinion should not be anchored to your predetermined geography.

You may have missed his point a bit. True hip hop is culturally a Black enterprise. However black people in most hoods do not typically visit record stores but their options tend to matter most in the genre because they are the target audience. The music was formed in those same hoods but what is successful in mainstream is appealing to a different audience. This is why rappers like Eminem have been very successful, despite not being backed up by the Black community. Sire, we know him and respect him, but majority of us don't buy his albums. But this metric alone Eminem will never be considered as one of the greatest in the Black community.
@rayhan3654
@rayhan3654 2 жыл бұрын
@@Astonvman007 Agreed, hip-hop is black culture ... But the moment you confess that rapping credibility is anchored to ones race and consequently the views prevalent in particular neighborhoods, then you divorce yourself from the fact that writing, flowing and producing require skill and competence. Ideally, you should be able to listen to music, in complete ignorance of the artists identity, and still comment upon the aesthetic value. I feel like you've used the term mainstream in an improper way so as to make it seem like Eminem became famous purely because of non-black support ... Eminem as well as: Jay z, Tupac, Nas, 50 cent, Lil Wayne, Kanye West and Snoop Dogg are the *most* mainstream rappers ever. Yet, not for a second would you suggest that these artists are famous purely because of their backing from the black community. Whenever a culture demands great public attention, the vast majority of its consumer base becomes from people that are external to the culture. HipHop would not be what it is today had it not been propelled beyond the hood (and this is a great thing: more ethnic minorities have become millionaires as a result of capitalising upon their musical talents).

Ur misconstruing what Lord Jamar has said, and the amount of content he's spoken on Eminem. Yeah, there's 50+ videos of him talking about Em on VladTV...because Vlad was asking him questions about Eminem. Should LJ have just said, "I aint talkin about Em amymore, next question!" This is just conjecture, but I'm fairly certain that if he did that, Stans would rush to say that "Lord Jamar doesn't wanna talk about Em cuz he can't take the heat of Em's disses, or he doesn't wanna get the hard questions about Hip Hop & race!" or something like that. It's a "damned if u do, damned if u don't" scenario. LJ wasn't offering unsolicited opinions about Eminem, he was responding to questions from others. Even the whole reason he started talking about Em in the 1st place was cuz he was RESPONDING, not looking for smoke. Recall that LJ's whole "guest in the house of Hip Hop" metaphor (to describe the relation between race & Hip Hop) was something he initially stated as a criticism on MACKLEMORE; ppl then tried to pin LJ (for daring to call white ppl "guests" in Hip Hop) by retorting "Oh yeah, what about Eminem, is HE a 'guest' too?", and LJ stood his ground and said "Yeah Em's a guest too, he's not exempt." That's when this whole Eminem vs Lord Jamar "beef" kicked off, with Em subsequently dissing LJ in his album. Lord Jamar's main point is that Hip Hop is black culture, and record sales don't determine who is the best at Hip Hop, and outsiders to the culture should show some deference/respect to the culture & what the ppl [of the culture] say. I'm a black man, and a student of traditional Shaolin Kung Fu. Kung Fu is globally popular, and practiced by nearly all ethnicities. If some Chinese kung fu philosophers/masters at the Shaolin Temple have a debate about who is THE MOST influential/important figure in the history of kung fu, no one is saying I cannot have an opinion on the matter, but it would behoove me to have a respectful deference (or at least a respectful yielding of an impasse) with the actual cultural progenitors of the art. However, this is a FARCRY from how Stans jump on Lord Jamar's back for not being impressed by Eminem. He's automatically labeled a hater/racist/has-been. Even when Eminem dissed Lord Jamar, it wasn't for LJ saying "Em isn't in [his] top 50 MCs", it was specifically for LJ's statement about white ppl being guests in Hip Hop. Lord Jamar has acknowledged Eminem's skill (he even said Eminem is better than himself as an MC), but he personally doesn't rank Em as the GOAT, neither does he think Em's lyrical speed and technical prowess are enough to rank him as the GOAT (to me at least, this just suggests that for LJ, these technical skills are something he's seen b4, and isn't causing him to gawk at Em; he factors other things into ranking MCs). If u disagree with LJ's ranking, that's fine (I disagree with Lord Jamar's ranking myself), but that isn't an occasion to call him a hater. The overwhelming majority of the reason why Lord Jamar still talks about Em (or had talked about him so much previously) is due to defending his position. Lord Jamar's not "obsessed" with Eminem; STANS are obsessed with Lord Jamar's take on Eminem. U can't keep pressing sum1 about a topic, forcing them to continually talk about that topic, and then turn around & say that he's the one who is "obsessed" with that topic.
@rayhan3654
@rayhan3654 2 жыл бұрын
@@ImpossibleIsNothin Points taken; I am not trying to convince LJ otherwise ... And I certainly did not call him a hater as you indicated in your comment. The purpose of my initial comment is to outline LJ's glaring inconsistencies and contradictions ... Now, of course this all started with Vlad, but surely there is a point where one decides that "damn, it's literally been a dozen times now that I've been asked questions relating to race, HipHop and Eminem..." You can easily just say: refer to my previous comments, I have no further things to say. Instead, LJ realised how lucrative and how popular his videos were becoming as a result of discussing Eminem ... So much so, that he even start mentioning him on his own Podcast and in videos with Rah Digga. Again, my point stands: rapping requires skill, as does Kung Fu and golf. Surely you won't suggest that Tiger Woods cannot be considered a GOAT because he's playing a sport that is predominantly white? It's just absurd to think in such racialised ways. Lastly, the entire viewpoint of paying respect to the culture was blown out of proportion; Em has literally always shouted out the legends and has never disrespected them in his raps. His diss towards LJ was justifiable considering that he has played a major role in breaking down racial barriers in hip-hop and introduced it commercially to a new market. Do you really think rappers would have become megastars purely from black support? It is predominantly non-blacks that are buying the merchandise, tickets, albums and streaming. Blacks in America constitute only 13% of the population; statistically, the consumer base is overwhelmingly non-black for *any* enterprise. Ps. I 100% agree that stans are perhaps the worst fan base in music history. They behave in a dogmatically cultist way. But that doesn't detract away from the fact that LJ has been contradictory, inconsistent and at times racist from the start.

Jamar's opinion is unfortunate because anyone who listens to rap music and knows its history within Hip Hop knows that Em pays huge respect and credits his ability and stylings to his inspirations. Em frequently points to Redman as the best on the mic, but wont hesitate to name Rakim, Kane, G Rap, Cube, and others. I wouldn't call myself an avid fan of Em, but his place in rap music and Hip Hop culture is significant and definitive. Jamar has his place, but I can't place a lot of stock in his opinions versus someone like Red, Black Thought, Nas, KRS One, etc. Jamar talks a lot but he seems to come from a place of superiority and authority when a lot of other pioneers will respect how rap music evolved to include someone like Em. I don't think it takes anything away from black culture either. Hip Hop was created in the streets and was catapulted by all colors whether you were a white dude graffin', a latino dude breakin', an asian dude scratchin', or a black dude rappin' - Hip Hop can be credited historically as black culture but it is the art of the streets - all inclusive. Jamar can have his opinion, as long he can understand that's really all it is and that his opinions dont speak for every Hip Hopper.

It's more about the politics of it. Whites buy music now in this era and even back then. To sell worldwide you have to appeal to Whites, if they said Eminem was trash they'd be boycotted by outraged Whites. Eminem is cool, but we have Black Eminem's in AZ, Hopsin, and Canibus.

Lord Jamar says it’s not about sales than proceeds to put Eminem with vanilla ice and mc hammer. The only thing in common with these guys is the sales. If he’s truly talking about lyricism he knows not to put Eminem with those guys. “The track is on some battling raps who want some static, cause I don’t really think that the fact that I’m slim matters, a plaque and platinum status is wack if I’m not the baddest” - Eminem (Till I Collapse) May 26, 2002 Eminem never cared about how much he sold. Of course it was a blessing to sell so much, and yes a lot of it had to do with his skin, even he’s said that much on his music way before it became a topic today, but he’s always stayed passion about his lyricism. “Let’s do the math; if I was black I would’ve sold half, I ain’t have to graduate from Lincoln High School to know that” - Eminem (White America) May 26, 2002 Idk who Lord Jamar has been debating with but it’s the wrong people. I’ve never heard anyone say Eminem is a goat because he sold a lot. Everyone says he’s a goat when acknowledging his raps. Old and current. Hell even a washed up Eminem is levels ahead of an artist in their prime. Old and currently. I personally believe he makes up those debates with imaginary people who bring up sales so that he can make his point and put Eminem in the same category with vanilla ice. That’s his way of manipulating the listener. I get when he says hip hop was started by black people and it is owned by black people and should be judged by black people. I get that. I respect that. I’m Mexican so maybe my opinion doesn’t matter. Regardless I’m gonna give it. Do we really want hip hop to be this way? I mean we know it was started by black people and we know it’s something black people can forever be proud of, but do we really want gate keepers at the top who can only pick and choose who the greats are? I believe that privilege should be for the people no matter what color you are. The way lord Jamar makes the game is basically saying it doesn’t matter how talented you are you will be judged differently if you are not black. That isn’t fair. And for someone who isn’t black it can discourage and take that passion away if you know it doesn’t matter how much you put into your music you will never be appreciated. My analogy to that.. we seen the world be upset at what these Olympic judges do to Simone Biles. We’ve seen the black community be upset about. We’ve seen the olympic community be upset about it. We’ve seen all people be upset about it. It’s not fair to judge her differently because she’s so talented that she does moves that nobody else can do. They found a way to change the game up so that they can discredit her. Make her feel like it’s pointless to be one of a kind if it don’t matter. Still she continues to do her thing and show the world she’s the goat because she is and the real will know. - I feel like lord Jamar is taking this route with Eminem. Eminem is crazy talented. He’s said things lyrically that only a few can do. Lyrically it’s no doubt he’s top 10 top 5 all time. Then here comes lord Jamar like the judges who judge Simone biles and discredits Eminem by saying it’s doesn’t matter if you’re lyrically one of a kind you’re white so you can never be great. That’s kinda fucked up. But lord Jamar is one man and one mans opinion doesn’t matter. He is not the official judge of hip hop. At the end of the day the people will still recognize Eminem as a great. Lord Jamar said only black people can judge and I’ve seen plenty of black artist, old and current, recognize Eminem as a goat. And of course you will have those who disagree. That’s ok. You can’t win them all. That’s part of the battle. Knowing there’s doubt and hate but continuing to strive through it. I think Eminem has shown heart when it comes to doing that as well. With that being said online you’ll come across so many different types of peoples. People who want equality and people who want supremacy. Wether it’s white supremacy or black supremacy. I’ve personally came across both online. Especially white supremacist when debating and arguing with them online about Trump, BLM, and all other injustices in America. There’s so many different peoples out there but the few that I’ve seen that are black supremacist or at least have some black supremacist views all agree with excluding Eminem from hip hop. I’m not sure why other than the fact that he’s white. Is it reverse psychology? Is it to turn the tables and piss off white people like “ha ha, look at you in the back of the bus, how does it feel to know you’ll never drive because you’re white”. Like is it just to prove a point. Idk what the intention is I just know it’s not healthy. Last thing we should all want is Hip Hop becoming a racist genre. Hip hop has done so much good for all peoples lives. It personally helped me through my trials and tribulations. Without a therapist I made it through because hip hop. It did that for me and I’m not black. Hip Hop should be for all people no matter who or what you are. Sorry for long ass comment. I just wanted to share my thoughts. Feel free to share yours in a reply. I would love to hear your thought on this. Maybe I can learn something from you if I have my views wrong.

Reflecting myself in a different way. In my opinion it‘s a very good thing that Em helped to put Hip Hop on another level. If ten percent from his fans get in Contact with artists like PE , Brand Nubian and do what i did in the late 80‘s . Reflecting , changing …The world would be a better place. The Eminem conversation is very simple. He sold more records because he's white & his "pop" fan's love his craziness however the reality is he's a pure MC that's all about lyricism, metaphors & creativity. He's ALWAYS given props to the LEGENDARY MC's because that's what he aspired to be. They know it & don't have a problem calling him one of the GOAT's & it has nothing to do with record sales. He himself has lyric's addressing him being like a new age Elvis. He can't control what skin color he is & anybody who says he's not speaking from their same prospective is wrong because he grew up in a trailer park which is the same as the ghetto. Poor people trying to survive on a day to day basis. the truth is if you love hip hop but hate Eminem then your just hating on or jealous of his talent as a white man!!!
