Gunung Rinjani pd masa lalu namanya adalah gunung Samalas, thn 1257 prnh meletus lebih dahsyat dari letusan gunung Tambora thn 1815. Diperkirakan ketinggian gunung Rinjani masa lalu lebih dari 4300 meter.
