after 12 days the mas is 6mg. so how could the initial mass be 2mg? if the initial is 2mg, after 12 days the mass should be less than 2mg.

We had to have the equation before determining the initial mass. Since we are dealing with half life, to find k we have to assume some initial amount and half the amount after 4 days. What would you want to start with? Again we can't find the initial amount until we find k by know the half life.
