what if there was a minus between 3c and 2d? will the 12cd be positive regardless? i get confused when there's minus between them instead

That would mean it is (-2d) so when it multiplies 3c it gives a negative, so it will be -12cd

You want to multiply the 3c in the first bracket by the 2d in the second bracket and the 3c in the second bracket by the 2d in the first bracket...
